Pittsfield School Committee Votes Taconic All-VocationalBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In a historic move fueled by the growing demand for skilled tradespeople and the evolution of career technical education, the School Committee has decided that Taconic is a solely vocational school. On Tuesday, the committee unanimously voted to start the school's transition to all vocational, only accepting Career Technical Education (CTE) students beginning in the fall. The motion was followed by a round of applause.
All new non-CTE students will attend Pittsfield High School and Taconic's remaining non-CTE students in Grades 10-12 will graduate as usual. The class of 2027 will be the first all-technical class to graduate.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Heidi Kushi pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny and was sentenced to state prison. On Monday, Jan. 30, Heidi Kushi, 57 years old of Pittsfield, pleaded guilty in Superior Court for two counts of larceny by single scheme. She was indited in July of 2019. The defendant was sentenced to 2 to 5 years in state prison, both counts concurrent, by Judge Agostini. Kushi, who began working for Donovan Construction in June 2013 as their accountant/bookkeeper, stole $138,772.72 during her time at the company. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With all licensing secured, Hot Plate Brewery will have a soft opening on Thursday. Owners Sarah Real and Mike Dell'Aquila will debut the micro-brewery to the public with six beers on tap starting at 4 p.m.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., transplants began planning their venture in the Berkshires two years ago, saying that the region seemed underserved from a craft beer perspective. "Hot Plate" was inspired by the equipment that the couple used to brew beer in the city when they lost heat and hot water for three years because of a code violation.
On Monday, Licensing Board granted Hot Plate a weekday (Monday through Saturday) and Sunday entertainment license.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — "Stars, Stripes, and Smiles in the Berkshires" was chosen as the theme for the line of march for the next Fourth of July Parade. Parade Committee Chairman Peter Marchetti said about 17 ideas were tossed out by the committee. "All were good but we try to use a litmus test that works for all units and the judges on the reviewing stand," he said. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A mother and daughter were injured after being struck by a car on West Street. On January 30, 2023, at approximately 9:13 am police, firefighters, and Action Ambulance responded to the 300 West St. area for a Pittsfield woman struck by a car. A 2015 Toyota Yaris operated by Loraine Utter, an 84-year-old Pittsfield resident, was traveling west on West St. in the 300 block when she struck two pedestrians who were crossing near Dorothy Amos Park. DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted to hold off on offering early voting by mail or in person for for the local election on May 8. The town had "successfully" implemented these practices as required during the September state primary election and November general election. However, towns and cities may opt out of early voting in municipal elections after a public hearing and vote 45 days prior to the election. Police are investigating a shooting at Zen's Pub that left one person hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries On Friday, Jan. 27, just after 10:30 pm officers with the Pittsfield Police Department responded to Zen’s Pub located at 303 Tyler Street for an incident involving multiple people. There was also a report that someone had fired a round from a gun. There was no ShotSpotter activation. Responding officers located blood at the scene and they found a firearm a short distance away.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Art Association (BAA) seeks donations of original artwork done by kids up to age ten for the 5X5at10x10 show and fundraiser. In collaboration with the Berkshire Museum and Pittsfield's 10x10 Festival in Feb., the BAA welcomes submissions from young artists from the Berkshires and beyond. Art work should be 5 x 5 inches, and prepared for hanging. 5x5 art will be exhibited from Thursday 2/16/23 to Thursday 2/23/23 at The Berkshire Museum, along with 10 x 10 pieces submitted by adult artists. 5x5 artists will be able to either sell or take home their pieces.
