Dalton Officials Talk Housing Options for Old Dalton High Property

DALTON, Mass.—The Berkshire Regional Planning Commission presented possible options for affordable housing at the old Dalton High property, located in the field in next to the Senior Center, during a Select Board meeting last month.   Over the last year, BRPC Community Planning Program Manager CJ Hoss has been in communication with Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson to discuss the type of projects the town can consider for the parcel.    "This brief analysis rose to the top as far as trying to understand the parcel we're sitting on to the south of the parking lot, essentially what potential housing possibilities could be for this parcel," Hoss

BCC Selects Project for Space Flight Experiment

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC), which was selected last year to participate in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP)'s Mission 18, has announced its project to be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a microgravity research experiment.    Entitled "The Effects of Microgravity on the Chromosomal Alignment on the Metaphase Plate in Onion Root Tip Cells," the project was researched and devised by BCC students William Garrity, Erica Langnickel and Anastasiya Bolotova. Man Pleads Guilty to North Adams Home Invasion, Assualt

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Tuesday, Jan 9, Arthur McCowan, 35 of Springfield, pleaded guilty to three charges in Berkshire Superior Court.    The Commonwealth requested 2.5 years in the House of Corrections for both counts of Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon and 2 years' probation on and after time served for Home Invasion.   McCowan was sentenced by Judge Duncan:    2.5 years in the house of corrections for Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Knife) 2 years' probation on and after sentence for ABDW 2.5 years in House of Corrections for Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Shod Foot) 2 years' probation on and after sentence for ABDW

Pittsfield Council Accepts $8M in GE Rest of River Funds

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city now has $8 million in PCB pollution settlement funds to support economic development.

The City Council on Tuesday accepted the payment of $8,000,000 from General Electric Corp. per the Rest of River settlement agreement on the cleanup of the Housatonic River. The funds will be put into the city's Economic Development Fund which supports growing businesses in the community.

Mayor Peter Marchetti explained that the cleanup has been making its way south for years.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — State legislators on Monday discussed issues that hit hard for women and families in the region.

State Sen. Paul Mark and state Reps. Tricia Farley-Bouvier and William "Smitty" Pignatelli were guests of the Berkshire County Commission on the Status of Women at the Berkshire Athenaeum. On the table were topics ranging from child care and housing to welcoming migrant families.

UPDATE: Pittsfield Crash Sends Three to BMC with Serious Injuries

: police have released the names of the three Pittsfield men involved in Tuesday's accident.

Anthony W. Nichols, 40, who was driving the truck, was transferred to Baystate Medical Center in serious condition.   The other two passengers are at BMC: Gregory Prince, 54, is listed in fair condition and Robert O'Bert, 60, is in good condition.    The accident remains under investigation.   The council set a pole hearing for National Grid for Jan. 23.

Dalton ADA Committee Considers Playground Mats for Parks

Dalton Cable Advisory Commission Recommends Attorney

DALTON, Mass. — The Cable Advisory Commission continued its efforts in negotiating a new contract with Charter Communications during its meeting on Monday evening.    During the meeting, the commissioners spoke to attorney William Solomon over the phone, during which they reiterated some of their priorities during the negotiation process.    These priorities include adding to the contract a 5 percent gross revenue, capital funds, funding for fiber optic cables to enhance connections, and updated equipment needed to handle this upgrade.    The commission voted to recommend hiring Solomon for the negotiations. Activists Stand for Democracy in Pittsfield on 3rd Anniversary of Insurrection

Pittsfield Health Board Supports Longevity of Community Health Worker

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city's community health worker has one year left of funding through the American Rescue Plan Act and department leaders want to ensure the position's longevity.

At its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, the Board of Health supported including the position in the line item budget. The community health post, which started in 2022, is funded through calendar year 2024 through ARPA.

"That doesn't mean we have to apply for additional funding," Dr. Jeffrey Leppo said. "But I would hate to be in a situation where we are in the middle of [fiscal year 2025] and we don't have any more funds for this."
