PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 2nd Street, an organization supporting formerly incarcerated men and women in Berkshire County, is making strides in the community since officially commencing operations on July 1, 2022. From July 1 through Nov. 16, 2022, 2nd Street met with 158 unduplicated clients, including 27 who engaged in programming on reentry self-management life skills, workforce development skills training and continuing education. In that time period, only one client returned to custody. BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $2.1 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse the costs of keeping the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) open safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The $2,113,969 Public Assistance grant will reimburse Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) for the cost of purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) and taking other measures to keep essential staff and the public safe at RMV locations between July 2020 and January 2021.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A number of Berkshire cultural organizations believe that properly compensating entry and mid-level employees is key in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Following an inclusive leadership training through Multicultural BRIDGE, six theater and arts organizations have launched a regional pay equity initiative that will release a set of recommendations and commitments in early 2023. The aim is to address barriers that limit participation in the field while creating a diverse workforce of professionals who feel supported by their employers.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Community Preservation Committee in December will review nine eligibility applications for open space and recreation, historic preservation, and community housing projects. The total ask for Community Preservation Act funding is around $859,000 with requests ranging from $8,000 to $300,000.
Six of the applications are from the city for parks projects and $150,000 to support the Affordable Housing Trust that was established over the summer.

The Laviolette family donated the tree and turned on the lights on Friday. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Hundreds gathered at Park Square on Friday for the city's first in-person tree lighting ceremony in three years.
The 25-foot tall white spruce is adorned by 20,000 lights, illuminating the area and spreading holiday cheer.
"There are so many kids and families here this evening and I know everyone is anxious to see the beautiful tree that was donated by the Laviolette family," Mayor Linda Tyer said right before the switch was flipped.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday passed three petitions asking multiple state and local entities to look into the possible effects of cell tower radiation. Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren and Ward 4 Councilor James Conant requested that the state and federal delegation is notified of the council's position on the negative health effects of cell tower radiation and that the Massachusetts Municipal Association, particularly Mayors Association President Linda Tyer and Councillors Association President Lisa Blackmer of the North Adams City Council, are contacted for assistance in dealing with them.  LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Police Station Committee reviewed a new design proposal for the combined police and ambulance facility, with hopes that residents can vote on the project at the special town meeting in January. Architect Brian Humes of Jackumsci & Humes created the new design to support police and ambulance services in the same space. Along with the design, Humes created a needs assessment for the building, which details the space and other needs for the building.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A proposal for a Starbucks on Route 7 was given the green light after reworking its curb cut to address traffic concerns. The City Council approved on Tuesday a special permit for the coffee shop and drive-through at 1030 South St. after being continued in October.
Councilors were concerned about the planned entrance and exit being close to the curb cut for Guido's Fresh Marketplace and the Hilton Garden Inn and urged the applicant to "be a good neighbor" and reconfigure it after hearing from abutters. Since then, the entrance was moved to the center of the property.
