 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — During the month of September, residents can show their Berkshire Athenaeum library card at participating local businesses for discounts and freebies. Those in need of a library card can sign up or renew at the Berkshire Athenaeum. When doing this, patrons will also receive a raffle ticket for a $50 Downtown Pittsfield Gift Card or a free Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum membership.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Flashing stop signs were added to the problematic Onota Street intersection as a cost-effective way to reduce crashes. The three-way stop is where Onota and Linden Streets intersect, and those traveling west on Linden Street are on an incline. The intersection is well-traveled and has two active businesses on it.
"We've all wanted it for a long time. It's good news," Ward 6 Councilor Dina Lampiasi said at last week's City Council meeting.
Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales told councilors that the upgraded signs were installed. They are similar to standard stop signs but have flashing

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Walmart plans to enclose part of its garden center for an online grocery pickup area.
On Thursday, the Conservation Commission OK'd the project to convert about 1,550 square feet of the outdoor garden center on the left side of the building. The total disturbance area is approximately 7,000 square feet and is confined to a few feet around the building and the drive aisle directly adjacent.
The expansion will facilitate the corporation's online ordering operations. This type of shopping became popular and necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced it will allocate $46 million through FY27 for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to support the strategic buildout of EV chargers across Massachusetts. The Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Coordinating Council (EVICC) – a cross-government effort to develop strategies and coordinate work developing EV charging infrastructure statewide – also released its most recent biennial Assessment outlining next steps in the state's rollout of EV chargers. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is advising residents to avoid mosquito bites and seal their homes as West Nile virus isolations continue to be detected.
On Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that West Nile has been found in mosquitoes collected at two different locations: two positive samples at Allendale Pines on Cheshire Road and one on Garland Avenue.

As their name suggests, many milkweed species produce a milky-white substance that can be seen if their stem is broken. Milkweed flowers are often fragrant and produce nectar for a wide array of butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Caterpillars of the iconic monarch butterfly (pictured above) feed exclusively on milkweed leaves and cannot complete their lifecycle without these plants. Many of us had our first encounter with milkweed as children, popping open a milkweed pod and plucking out the white fluff then releasing the feathery strands and attached seeds into the wind. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Affordable Housing Trust voted to require that grantees of funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Community Initiative program sign an assurance agreement for nondiscrimination.
The agreement states that, as a condition of federal financial assistance, they will comply with national law and policies that prohibit discrimination, including Title IV, Title IX, and titles within the Americans with Disabilities Act, and allow the USDA to access records for a compliance review or complaint investigation.
