Pittsfield CPA Project Eligibility Applications Open | 02:00PM / Tuesday, October 17, 2023 | |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Community Preservation Committee will be holding a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25 related to the use of Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds and the city of Pittsfield's priorities in relation to the Community Preservation Plan. The hearing will be held in Room 203 on the second floor of City Hall, 70 Allen Street. Also, the Committee announces that the project eligibility application process for a new year of CPA funding is open through November 17. The Committee will provide an overview of previous allocations of CPA funds and welcomes public participation to understand community priorities as it begins a new year of 0 Comments

The ton of electronics collected will be recycled by North Coast Services. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Community members were spared the cost of larger disposables and ensured that their items were recycled properly during the annual West Side neighborhood cleanup and bulky waste collection on Saturday.
The event is targeted at residents of the neighborhood and has a twofold aim of providing a free opportunity to dispose of items such as mattresses and furniture while keeping them out of dumping areas.
Now in its 20th year, it was hosted by the city's Department of Community Development in partnership with the Pittsfield Housing Authority and 18 Degrees/Pittsfield Community

DALTON, Mass. — The prospect of a skatepark was presented to the Open Space and Recreation Committee during its meeting on Thursday night. Select Board member Dan Esko attended the meeting as a resident and board advocate to gauge the committee's interest. Esko has been collaborating with Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson to explore this idea and determine its feasibility. This is not a Select Board initiative. While serving on the board, Esko has heard from numerous members of the community who expressed an interest in having a skatepark in town. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A household hazardous waste collection, organized by the city of Pittsfield in conjunction with the town of Dalton, will be held on Saturday, Oct 21. The collection will be held at the city's Highway Facility, 81 Hawthorne Ave. Enter through the rear entrance. A wide range of unwanted household products with labels indicating the need for special handling or disposal will be accepted, as well as rechargeable button and other non-alkaline batteries, and also mercury-bearing thermostats and thermometers. Dalton Select Board Discusses Updating Alcohol and Drug Policy By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board continued its discussion on updating the town's Alcohol and Drug Policy during its meeting last week. Since the legalization of marijuana the town has to navigate how it wants to update its drug policy taking into consideration federal guidelines, exposure type, and medical and recreational use. The town's current policy was written prior to the legalization so it is unclear what to do in cases where the presence of cannabis shows up positive in an employee or during the pre employment physical examination. Let's Go Paperless | This is from Ward 6 Councilor John Krol's eblast today. His switch to digital immediately caught our attention. With the associated costs - nearly $4,000 a year for paper alone! - zipping councilors "the packet" (as we in the know like to call it) over the ether makes loads of sense.
Digital also means the average citizen gets far better access to these public documents than ever before. The city clerk's office has been diligent about posting meeting agendas and, where possible, relevant documents. So in terms of saving money and time and getting information out efficiently, digital is the way to go.
I would like to thank City Clerk Linda Tyer for agreeing to print out one less city council packet, as I have officially gone paperless for council meetings - which I hope will be a trend that can be extended throughout city government.
 The bulky (and often, very bulky) city council packet that councilors use for a reference costs an average of $170 per meeting for paper alone. Add the additional costs of ink/toner, wear and tear on city hall copiers, and the time and energy of staff who put it all together - and a simple transition away from paper benefits everyone.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Dozens of youths, many of them under the age of 5, attended an open house at the Berkshire Music School Saturday, as the educational nonprofit enters its 70th year at its 30 Wendell Avenue home.
The open house featured a sample class, access to musical instruments, information for parents, refreshments... and more than a few delighted squeals, proving once again the inherent interest in making a joyful noise is not generational, and will never go out of style.
