Man Charged in Pittsfield Fire That Killed CatStaff Reports ,

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A 23-year-old man has been charged for an early morning structure fire that killed a family cat. Around 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, police and firefighters responded to a two-family residence on Fourth Street for a reported structure fire. Hunter Barrett was arrested and charged with arson later that day. "All occupants of the building were able to safely exit the building," police wrote around 8:30 p.m. "Unfortunately, a family cat perished in the blaze." The street number was not disclosed. As a result of the ensuing investigation, Barrett was arrested and charged with arson of a dwelling. He is expected

Derek Leffert of Gateway Fiber, left, says the company is investing millions into Pittsfield to provide a better internet service. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Residents will have more competition for internet service with a new provider coming to the city.
On Tuesday, a ribbon cutting marked Gateway Fiber's start of construction in Pittsfield. The fiber-optic network will offer subscription plans ranging from $65 to $150 per month, depending on speed.
"We recognize Pittsfield as a very great opportunity for us," Head of Safety and Government Affairs Derek Leffert said.
The company has begun construction on networks in Northampton and Gardner,

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Humane Society has kicked off its 13th annual "Choose your Subaru" car raffle with Haddad Subaru. The prize is a 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Limited, Forester Premium or Outback Premium with an extended warranty and three years of free maintenance. Tickets are $40 each or three for $100. The winner will be drawn on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Berkshire Humane Society. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites the public to attend a meeting on Tuesday, July 22, on Silver Lake. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers. GE will provide a presentation on upcoming maintenance of the cap that covers the bottom of Silver Lake and then take questions with members of EPA's GE-Housatonic River Superfund Site team. Under the 2000 Consent Decree, GE was required to remove contaminated bank soils, remove and replace sediments near an outfall from the GE plant, cap the entire 26-acre lake bottom and perform periodic reviews of the cap’s effectiveness and integrity. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — A Connecticut man is accused of stabbing two men at the Mount Greylock Campground on Friday. Jeffrey Deluca, 47, of Wilton, Conn., was arraigned Monday in Central Berkshire District Court on eight charges: two counts each of assault and battery by dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to murder; three counts of reckless endangerment of a child; and assault & battery causing a serious bodily injury. He was ordered to be held on dangerousness. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee will decide a policy to keep flag displays consistent with the district's sentiments.
On the agenda for Wednesday's meeting is a first reading of a "Flag Protocols on School Property" policy similar to an ordinance adopted by the City Council the prior week. It allows Pittsfield's flag, the United States flag, flags of other nations recognized by the U.S. government, and flags commemorating significant events or causes consistent with the school district's official sentiments.

James Scales IV, 38, allegedly passed a note to a teller, brandished a knife, and fled the bank with some cash. A kiosk offers information on the trail and conserved woodlands. WASHINGTON, Mass. — The Nature Conservancy created a trail along Coles Brook with the property's history in mind.
On Friday, the nonprofit held the first guided walk through the Headwaters Trail Loop, located in the Coles Brook Preserve. The nearly 1,500-acre property that spans into Middlefield now has a 1.2-mile trail with an OPDMD (other power-driven mobility devices) route.
The conservancy hasn't had a trail opening for more than 25 years, and now has about 10 statewide. Coles Brook is one of the organization's largest state preserves and consists of shrubby wetlands,
