Juvenile Injured in Pittsfield Shooting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A boy was shot early Tuesday morning and taken to Berkshire Medical Center with wounds that were no considered life-threatening, according to police.    Police report that officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation about 12:25 a.m. on Tuesday in the area of Pleasant Street. The activation indicated multiple rounds were fired.    Responding officers arrived on scene and located the victim. A home had also been struck by gunfire and officers located additional ballistic evidence on scene.   The victim's name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. Lenox Residents Encouraged to Bring Storm Debris to Compost Site

LENOX, Mass. — The compost site at wastewater treatment plant on Crystal Street will open on Saturday from 9 to noon for the disposal of any debris from the on July 12 storm.    The Department of Public Works is closing Reservoir Road intermittently this week for tree work.   The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., said straight-line winds of up to 85 mph blew a path nearly a mile wide and 2 miles long and killed a New Hampshire man.   A series of large thunderstorms storms were moving through the Northeast, bringing high winds, rain and hail to some areas.    The severe winds blew through the town about 5 p.m. on July 12, the same day a microburst

Lanesborough Planning Board Reorganizes

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Planning Board welcomed its new member Leanne Yinger on Monday.    During the meeting, the board voted to have Gwen Miller as the new chair after Jeff DeChaine decided not to run for another 5-year term.   Miller has been on the Planning Board since 2017 and received her master's in regional planning from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has worked itown and regional planning in the Berkshires for the last decade.   The only concern that the board raised was meeting attendance because of family responsibilities and her job as land use director and town planner for Lenox.   Miller reassured the board that she

State Lawmakers Push for Medicare For All

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Some state legislators argue that passing Medicare for All in Massachusetts could lead to a movement across the nation.   That was the topic of a roundtable discussion state Rep. Paul Mark led with state Sen. Jamie Eldridge of Acton and state Rep. Pittsfield Historical Commission Holds Off on Demolition Delay

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission is torn on a demolition delay application from Berkshire Theatre Group for a carriage house located behind the Thaddeus Clapp House.

The panel decided to take some extra time with the application last week and will have a site visit to the structure.

After BTG spent more than $1 million to restore the Clapp House, a professional assessment indicated that the best path forward for the barn is to take it down. In the future, the theater sees more artist housing in that space, which is an area where it sees great need.

Pittsfield Allocates $8.6M in ARPA Funds for Housing Initiatives

White Terrace Apartments, the scene of two major fires, will house 37 units of affordable housing depending on state funding support. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mayor Linda Tyer has allocated $8.6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to address an issue that has become more prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic: housing insecurity and homelessness.

The allocation will help fund the construction of 37 new permanent supportive housing units and 41 new affordable housing units in the city.

2022 State of County Report Reveals Higher Income, More Mental Illness

BERKSHIRE COUNTY, Mass. — The 2022 State of the County Report shows increases in income and a decrease in unemployment but also a worsening of mental illness and family distress.

Over 100 individuals and community organizations in Berkshire County have worked over the last two years to identify indicators that track the region’s performance across eight sectors: Economy, Education, Environment, Government, Health, Housing, Social Environment, and Transportation.

Berkshire Benchmarks, which is an initiative of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, was tasked with identifying these sectors and then highlighting indicators within.
