Rut is a term used to describe the behavior of deer during the breeding season when males pursue females that are in estrous and ready to breed. The rut can range from several months in southern states like Florida to a short window of time in the fall in the Northeast. In Massachusetts, the peak rut is between Nov. 6 – Nov. 20. Timing of the rut is related to the period of daylight and has nothing to do with temperature, rain, snow, or moon phase, contrary to commonly held beliefs. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Rosemarie Blake was named Executive Assistant of the Year after more than a half-century of service to the Pittsfield Public Schools.
She is described as the "institutional memory of the district."
Blake retired over the summer after 54 years with the district and, on Wednesday, was given the award from the Massachusetts Council of School Committee Administrative Personnel.
"One line in your nomination really stayed with me: 'Administrators relied on her as the institutional memory of the district.' That says so much about your heart, your knowledge, and your lifelong commitment to this community," explained Brenda

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Innovation Center's plans for an optics tech hub have been boosted by $5.2 million from the state.
On Thursday, the Healey-Driscoll administration and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's Innovation Institute announced over $16.3 million in funding and designated 14 state regions as "TechHubs" through the Massachusetts (MA) TechHubs Program. The awards were announced at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the launch of a new campaign to prevent roadside crashes involving drivers and passengers who exit their vehicles. With the conclusion of Daylight Savings Time on Sunday morning, Nov. 2, MassDOT is launching an awareness campaign for motorists to make themselves visible when exiting their vehicles on the side of the road, particularly after sunset. In addition to the public awareness campaign, MassDOT will distribute approximately 1,000 Car Safety Kits to new drivers at certain RMV Road Test Locations in November. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority Board finalized the new administrator's contract on Thursday. Kathleen Lambert accepted the position in September pending contract negotiations. The negotiations were halted at the board's meeting on Oct. 14 as they failed to have a quorum. On Thursday, the board revised the language for the termination clause for performance reviews so they can be done as needed. The BRTA also spoke about language for a response to an Open Meeting Law complaint made by board member Rene Wood. BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration joined with Eversource, National Grid and Unitil to raise awareness about new electric heat pump rates as the winter heating season begins. Governor Maura Healey called for expanded heat pump rates in her Energy Affordability Agenda announced in March. Starting this winter, the seasonal reduced rates are available to residential customers of the three major utilities who heat their homes with heat pumps, one of the most efficient forms of heating.  PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The Berkshire District Attorney's Office says Brodie Slonski was killed over an underground vape ring. On Friday, Jaequan Spratling, who will be 19 next month, was arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court after being arrested the previous evening in the murder of 17-year-old Slonski last week. Spratling is alleged to have orchestrated a meetup for disposable vapes between Slonski and another person, which then turned deadly, from his home.
