State Unemployment and Job Estimates for November 2023

BOSTON —  The state's November total unemployment rate was 2.9 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from the revised October estimate of 2.8 percent, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Friday.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) preliminary job estimates indicate Massachusetts gained 3,200 jobs in November. This follows October's revised loss of 500 jobs. The largest over-the-month private sector job gains were in Leisure and Hospitality, Financial Activities, and Government. Employment now stands at 3,786,200. Massachusetts gained 724,600 jobs since the employment low in April 2020.

MassDOT Announces the Winners of the Name A Snowplow Contest

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced the winners of the second annual, "Name A Snowplow" contest for statewide elementary and middle school students in Massachusetts.    The winning plow names are Flower Plower, Edward Blizzardhands, Glacier Gobbler, Polar Pathmaker, Snow B Wan Kenobi, The Snolar Express, Sleetwood Mac, Snow Place Like Home, Snow-hemian Rhapsody, The Mayplower, Snow Monstah, Fast and Flurryous.    This contest received entries from public school classrooms from across Massachusetts. The contest chose names for 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during this 2023/2024 winter season. The

MEMA Receives Federal Funds For Regional Training Center

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has been awarded $1.5 million in federal grant funding to facilitate collaboration among and provide training to emergency management professionals through the Northeast Emergency Management Training and Education Center (NEMTEC).   The funding comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program (RCPGP).   NEMTEC waslaunched in April 2023, offering accessible, no-cost, comprehensive training and education in emergency management across the six New England states to strengthen the regional response to natural and manmade disasters. EPA New England Tips for a Healthier Heating Season

BOSTON — During the winter, many people seek to avoid high heating costs by turning to wood as a fuel.

Unfortunately, many wood heaters are inefficient and emit more pollutants into the air than heating with oil, natural gas or electricity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) New England regional office is sharing tips to help people enjoy a healthier heating season.

MassDOT Plans to Establish Network of Electric Vehicles Fast Chargers

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is reaching out to vendors to establish a network of reliable fast charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) on state roadways.    A Request for Responses (RFR) has been issued which will result in a list of pre-qualified vendors from which MassDOT may select one or more vendors to enter into a pre-development agreement, obligating the vendor(s) to evaluate sites that are identified for National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI).  Following the completion of the evaluation and confirmation by MassDOT as to particular sites, MassDOT will then issue a Task Order to vendors which are under

Richmond Consolidated Students Collect Socks, Food for Pantry

The school collected more than 1,000 items of food for the food pantry in Pittsfield.  RICHMOND, Mass. — Students at Richmond Consolidated School recently concluded their annual food drive and sock drive, having collected 578 pairs of socks and more than 1,000 items of food.    According to Student Leadership Team coordinator Zachary Houle, a special education teacher, students in Grades 5 through 8 take on the leadership roles of a project that they choose based on the positive impact they believe it will have.     "They look for a service project that will impact people right here, around our community," Houle said.   For the past

Hillcrest Commons Resident Marks 104 Years This Month

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Arline Newton celebrated her 104th birthday on Dec. 14 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation.    Staff and residents joined together to wish her a very happy birthday.     Newton was born in 1919, the year that the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees. She has been a resident of Hillcrest Commons for the last five years.     Newton is still very active and can be seen in the photos helping to decorate one of Hillcrest Commons' Christmas trees.
