Berkshire Organizations Share in Findings From Western Mass Housing Study

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, Hearthway, and Upside413 are partnering with Way Finders and their research partner, the UMass Donahue Institute, to share in-depth findings from "Building Homes. Building Futures."

This first-ever housing study will cover Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties at an event on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Berkshire Community College's Boland Theater.

According to the study, Berkshire County needs nearly 2,000 new housing units to meet current demand. Even with projected declines in population locally, the gap will still be nearly 1,000 units by 2035. Even more may be needed to stem population loss. The

Flushing of Pittsfield's Water System: Oct. 20-24

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Monday, Oct. 20 marks the start of phase three for the fall flushing schedule of the City of Pittsfield's water system.   This biannual process occurs twice a year typically in the spring and the fall.   Mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, except holidays, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.   This phase of flushing is expected to occur between Oct. 20 to Oct. 24.   For Tuesday, only, there also will be early morning flushing activity from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.   The impacted area includes South Street from the South Street/East Housatonic intersection to Park Square; North Street from Park Square to Wahconah

Nominees for Ninth Berkshire Theatre Awards Announced

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association (BTCA) has announced the nominees for the 2025 Berkshire Theatre Awards, colloquially known as The Berkies.

The awards will be presented on the evening of Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church in Pittsfield. This is the ninth time the awards will be presented to honor and celebrate the excellence and diversity of theatre in the greater Berkshire region. 

In addition, The Larry Murray Award for Community Outreach and Support through Theater will be presented. The Sharon Playhouse in Sharon, Conn., won the award last year for their community and education efforts.

MassDOT Announces Reprocurement for Service Plazas Contract

Pittsfield Schools Hire MCLA Administrator as Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance

PITTSFIELD, Mass.— The School Committee voted to appoint Bonnie Howland as the district's assistant superintendent for business and finance. 

"The work I have done has taught me about finding balance, about how financial responsibility and fairness can work together to open doors for students and strengthen institutions," Howland said during a special meeting on Thursday. 

She has worked in higher education and public service for over 20 years, as Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) director of student accounts since 2015, and the director of student financial services since 2018.

Pittsfield At Large Candidates Debate

PITTSFIELD, Mass.—  At-large candidates gave voters a glimpse of their vision for Pittsfield during Thursday's debate sponsored by Pittsfield Community Television and iBerkshires.

When asked if the city should pursue the proposed consolidation of Crosby Elementary School and Conte Community School into a new build on West Street, the answer was "absolutely."

Four incumbents, a former councilor, and an outgoing School Committee member took turns in threes on questions that were chosen blindly from a bulletin board.  This includes Kathleen Amuso, Earl Persip, III, Pete White, Alisa Costa, and challengers Karen Kalinowsky and Sara Hathaway.
