PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Conservation Commission has requested another plan to improve access on the south shoreline of Pontoosuc Lake while stabilizing the bank.

Last week, a modified planting plan from the Parks Commission was tabled.  The conversation is now centered on how to use alternative erosion controls from the shrubbery that was planted to balance stabilization and access.

"Moving forward, you're going to have to submit a plan to address the erosion and the issues," Chair James Conant said to Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resources Manager James McGrath, representing the city.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of Health plans to present recommendations around public camping in February.

On Tuesday, the City Council accepted a communication from health officials after sending the proposed camping ordinance to them. The board met in early October and began its work to bring forward public health-centered solutions that address core concerns the ordinance seeks to mitigate.

"The Board of Health will support the Health Department in developing an alternative enforcement and response approach that prioritizes both public health and human dignity," the BOH wrote to the council.

"The Board recognizes that the current camping ban

DALTON, Mass. – The Boys and Girls Club of the Berkshires defeated Dalton in the Senior Division Championship Game of the Berkshire County Youth Football League, 30-0, on Sunday.   It was an unusual start for both teams, as the Pittsfield squad opened with a dominant defensive stand, forcing Dalton to punt after three consecutive plays for a loss. The Bulldogs didn’t help their cause early, turning the ball over on each of their first two drives. In between those turnovers, Dalton also fumbled, resulting in three straight possessions ending with fumbles.   The Boys and Girls Club eventually settled in and struck first with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Messiah Grandson

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Select Board wants the Berkshire Mall property to be secured but the owners continue to cite the Baker Hill Road District as their roadblock for further action.

On Monday, the board had a tense conversation with JMJ RE Holdings about safety concerns brought forward by the police. Principal Jay Jones agreed to apply for demolition permits, and the 600,000-square-foot mall is estimated to cost as much as $7 million to take down.

Chief Robert Derksen reported that there has been more vandalism, dozens of break-ins, with at least half resulting in arrest, and vehicles are being damaged by deteriorating road and parking lot around the

The Humane Society was able to raise $81,500 from the raffle; last year, the raffle raised $70,000.

"The one thing I look at most is the money we raised is so much more this year. That's just so many more animals that we know are in need that we're going to be able to help out now," Executive Director John Perrault said.

This is the first year the society was able to sell all 2,400 raffle tickets of $100 to win a 2026 Subaru from Haddad Subaru.

@theMarket: Markets Choppy on Good News
By Bill Schmick,
04:27PM / Friday, October 31, 2025
It was a classic case of "buy the rumor, sell the news." Even though the Fed did cut interest rates again and a deal between China and the U.S. was announced, investors failed to celebrate.   Markets were bid up in anticipation of these events long before they happened. A Fed cut has been in the works for approximately a month. Expectations that the two largest economies in the world would reach a satisfactory arrangement were also well telegraphed as early as last week. On Sunday, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, all but said the deal is in the bag.   However, investors did not get all they wanted in either case. Markets had already priced in another rate cut

Letter: I Chose Pittsfield, and I Chose Cam Cunningham
Letter to the Editor,
04:00PM / Friday, October 31, 2025

To the Editor:

I could spend hours telling you about Cam Cunningham and why he is exactly what this city needs for a Ward 2 councilor. But by now, you likely came to the same conclusion.

If not, I'm not here to persuade you, because I am confident that if you and the residents of ward 2 truly want to make an educated and responsible decision at the voting polls on November 4th, you will reach out to him, have a conversation, or at minimum, you will read his platform, and listen to his interviews and debates:

Cameron and I live in this city because we chose Pittsfield to be our home. We don't have any family here, and

03:58PM / Friday, October 31, 2025

STOW, Mass. — With the end of Daylight Savings Time just around the corner, State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine and the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts are reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms when they change their clocks.

"Working smoke and CO alarms are your family’s first line of defense against an emergency at home," said State Fire Marshal Davine. "As we 'fall back' this weekend, please take a few minutes to be sure you and your loved ones are protected."

Modern smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have the manufacturing date printed on the back of the device. Smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years,
