PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police Chief Thomas Dawley II, a 22-year veteran of the Pittsfield Police Department, wants to make Pittsfield the safest city in the county and the state. Raw sewage overflowed in the bathroom near dispatch and flooded the police station on April 17. DALTON, Mass. — Police Chief Deanna Strout told the Select Board last week about urgent needs to be addressed at the police station including plumbing, mold, ventilation, mice, water damage, heating, and damage to cells. Select Board members voted to freeze American Rescue Plan Act fund spending until the next meeting when Building and Grounds Superintendent Jeff Burch will have a better idea of the cost of repairs.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council breezed through 12 departmental budgets on the third day of hearings last week for fiscal year 2025. All were preliminarily approved with a unanimous vote. During the finance and administration discussion, Councilor at Large Alisa Costa stressed the importance of livable wages for city workers. She acknowledged the city's support of raising salaries over the last few years but pointed out that a few positions are making less than $40,000 annually.
Finance Director Matthew Kerwood said all union positions are subject to collective bargaining "so what you see in terms of salaries before you are a result of the collective bargaining

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Community members have rallied in concern over an injured bear wandering northwest Pittsfield into Lanesborough the last few days.
Since late last week, Ward 7 Councilor Rhonda Serre has received several calls about what appears to be a mama bear with a broken leg traveling near St. Joseph Cemetery to outer Hancock Road and Churchill Road with her cub. Home-security camera videos have also been posted to social media depicting the duo, including footage on a Lanesborough community Facebook page.
Serre is concerned about an injured bear being in a residential neighborhood, both for the safety of residents and the bear. She noted that as kind human

DALTON, Mass. — An update to the Central Berkshire Regional School District's Regional Agreement that was thought to be uncontroversial has turned out not to be the case. The item failed during the Hinsdale annual town meeting on May 15 and the Peru town meeting on June 1. The regional agreement needed six out of the seven towns to vote in favor of passing. Hinsdale voted against the Regional Agreement draft because it wanted included in the agreement that the School Committee's decision on the voting method for incurring debt needs to be unanimous; not a two-thirds vote, Superintendent Leslie Blake-Davis said.  DALTON, Mass. — Aidan Garcia and Sarah Thornton have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the 2024 graduating class at Wahconah Regional High School. Both students will speak at graduation ceremonies on Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The valedictory speech is titled, "Forever" and the salutatory address is "Reflections". PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Jay Santangelo of Lenox was the top nonbinary runner at the Berkshire Pride 5K on Sunday. Santangelo covered the 5-kilometer course in 27 minutes, 14.53 seconds to place 16th overall among 94 finishers. Pittsfield's Cam LaFerriere was the overall winner in 22.45.72, a 7:19 mile pace. LaFerriere finished 24 seconds ahead of Canaan, N.Y.'s, Thomas Salaatte in second place (23:09.52). DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board voted Robert Bishop as chair and Dan Esko as vice chair during its meeting last week. The motion was made by Marc Strout and seconded by Bishop to nominate Esko as vice chair. Esko has been on the board for four years and has served as vice chair for one year thus far.
