PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Common Room at Zion Lutheran Church of Pittsfield invites parents and caregivers to a Parent Group Meet and Greet on Wednesday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m.    This informal gathering offers a chance for adults to connect and for children to play in a relaxed, welcoming space.   Coffee, donuts, and light snacks will be available. Lanesborough Police Chief Stresses Need for Resources

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Police Chief Robert Derksen, citing a week of incidents, emphasized the need for law enforcement resources.   In a Tuesday press release, he called attention to an assault, domestic incident, and stabbing that happened within the last week — and the lack of officers to deal with them.   "Two of the incidents occurred while only one patrol officer was working, which is most of the time, including the most serious incident, which the officer responded to by himself and handled alone until I was able to call additional officers in from off-duty to assist, because no backup was available," he wrote in the communication posted to the

Pittsfield Designates Lower, Upper Middle Schools in Grade Restructure

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee has voted that Herberg will house Grades 5-6 and Reid will be home to Grades 7-8 when the middle schools restructure. 

"It's an exciting opportunity, actually," Committee member Sara Hathaway said. 

Last month, they made a historic vote to create an upper elementary school for Grades 5-6 and a junior high school for Grades 7-8 by the 2026-2027 academic year. A stipulation was added that if goals in the Middle School Restructuring Committee's timeline are not met by the December meeting, it will be delayed one

Pittsfield Firefighters Knock Down House Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters were able to knock down a blaze in an unoccupied house at 58 Valentine Road on Wednesday.    Firefighters responded at about 4:43 p.m. after multiple people reported seeing fire showing from the structure as they drove by.    It was unknown at that time if anyone was still in the building.   Deputy Chief Neil Myers said four engine companies and a ladder company responded and found flames coming from the right exterior of the single-story ranch and immediately stretched a hose line for fire attack. Pittsfield Police Investigating Shooting on Dalton Ave.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are investigating a shooting on Tuesday night that left one person injured.    A press release by Lt. John Mazzeo said the department received a ShotSpotter activation for one gunshut ain the area of 63 Dalton Ave. While officers were responding, the Pittsfield Police received multiple reports from people saying they had heard an individual shot. This occurred at about 9 p.m.     Officers discovered an individual with a single non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was treated and released from Berkshire Medical Center.    The suspect fled the area after the shooting.   Police have not released any further

Man Charged in Pittsfield Fire That Killed Cat

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A 23-year-old man has been charged for an early morning structure fire that killed a family cat. 

Around 3:10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, police and firefighters responded to a two-family residence on Fourth Street for a reported structure fire.  

Hunter Barrett was arrested and charged with arson later that day. 

"All occupants of the building were able to safely exit the building," police wrote around 8:30 p.m.

"Unfortunately, a family cat perished in the blaze." 

The street number was not disclosed. 

As a result of the ensuing investigation, Barrett was arrested and charged with arson of a dwelling. He is expected

Gateway Fiber Begins Expansion to Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Residents will have more competition for internet service with a new provider coming to the city. 

On Tuesday, a ribbon cutting marked Gateway Fiber's start of construction in Pittsfield. The fiber-optic network will offer subscription plans ranging from $65 to $150 per month, depending on speed. 

"We recognize Pittsfield as a very great opportunity for us," Head of Safety and Government Affairs Derek Leffert said. 

The company has begun construction on networks in Northampton and Gardner,

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Humane Society has kicked off its 13th annual "Choose your Subaru" car raffle with Haddad Subaru.   The prize is a 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Limited, Forester Premium or Outback Premium with an extended warranty and three years of free maintenance.   Tickets are $40 each or three for $100. EPA Sets Meeting on Silver Lake Maintenance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites the public to attend a meeting on Tuesday, July 22, on Silver Lake.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers. 

GE will provide a presentation on upcoming maintenance of the cap that covers the bottom of Silver Lake and then take questions with members of EPA's GE-Housatonic River Superfund Site team. 

Under the 2000 Consent Decree, GE was required to remove contaminated bank soils, remove and replace sediments near an outfall from the GE plant, cap the entire 26-acre lake bottom and perform periodic reviews of the cap’s effectiveness and integrity.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Dax Russell threw 6 and a third innings Friday to lead the Plymouth Babe Ruth All-Stars to a 6-4 win over Pittsfield in the semi-finals of the New England Regional Championships.   Russell helped his cause by doubling and driving in a pair of runs for the Eastern Massachusetts champs, who took a 6-2 lead after two innings and held off Pittsfield late.   In the sixth, Bryce Hoff led off with a triple and came home on Jace Coco's RBI single to make it 6-3.   In the top of the seventh, Kydd Kearns led off with a single, and Austin Decker moved him to second with a single.
