Pittsfield Fire Contained to Kitchen

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A small kitchen fire forced a Strong Avenue family to flee their home on Monday evening.    According to Deputy Chief Daniel Garner, the Fire Department responded at about 6:13 p.m. to 51 Strong Ave. for a reported grease fire with three engines, Tower 1 and Engine 5's Rapid Intervention Team.    Engine 6 found the occupants outside and extinguished the fire as Engine 3's crew removed damaged appliances and burnt materials. Tower 1's crew ventilated the structure of smoke and dry chemical irritants.    A family of five was temporarily displaced during this event but the property was turned back to the owner, and they are

BCC President Ellen Kennedy to Retire at Conclusion of Academic Year

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ellen Kennedy will retire as seventh president of Berkshire Community College at the end of the academic year.    The college made the announcement on Tuesday. Kennedy has been president since 2012.   In a message to the campus community, Kennedy emphasized that the decision comes after deep reflection and is guided by both professional and personal considerations.    "Looking ahead, the college will soon embark on the development of a new Strategic Plan and prepare for its 2029 [New England Commission of Higher Education] NECHE Self-Study," Kennedy said in the announcement. Dalton Chief Wants More Action on Police Station Proposal

DALTON, Mass. — Police Chief Deanna Strout wants a more focused and actionable approach to the planning of the proposed police station.    "We as a group need to pick a site, get [Brian Humes of Jacunski Humes Architects LLC] here to give a design, and get a cost so our community can make an educated decision … right now, what I'm seeing is everybody's going in different directions on this committee," she said at last week's Public Safety Facility Committee meeting.    Despite inquiries from the public, proposed sites for the facility that are on private property remain undisclosed, Strout said.    During the meeting on

New Pittsfield Mural Unveiled in Reimagine Dunham Mall Effort

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — During First Friday a new mosaic mural and Downtown Pittsfield map was unveiled with a ribbon cutting.

Artist Robert Markey designed three panels. The three different panels represent the river and mountains in Pittsfield, the second represents people dancing, and the third represents the center of the city.

Markey says he was shown photos of the city and also took photos himself before putting these together.

Update on Berkshire Mall Expected at Board Meeting

LANESBOROUGH, Mass.— There will be some kind of update on the Berkshire Mall at Monday's Select Board meeting. 

Amidst legal action and the mall owners, JMJ RE Holdings, announcing a new health-care partner, the Finance Committee wants to know the possible impact of a 400-unit senior living facility at 655 Cheshire Road on town resources.

State Fire Marshal: September is College Fire Safety Month

STOW, Mass. — September is College Fire Safety Month in Massachusetts, and State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine is reminding students, parents, and others to be sure that their living spaces have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and that they know two ways out in an emergency.

Massachusetts fire departments reported 2,491 fires in student dormitories, fraternities, and sororities in Massachusetts between 2020 and 2024. These fires caused five civilian injuries, 11 fire service injuries, and around $3.7 million in estimated damages. More than 90 percent of them were related to unsafe cooking, with unattended cooking the most common factor.

1Berkshire Debuts New Downtown Pittsfield Office

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Walking to the 1Berkshire office, you will now be greeted with a view of the "Sisterhood" mural and the Barrington Stage. 

On Thursday, the economic development organization held an open house for its new space on the second floor of Crawford Square at 137 North St. The 4,300-square-foot office, located in Suite 200, has been refreshed with colorful accent walls and coordinating furniture. 

This, along with the slow rollout of a new logo, aims to represent 1Berkshire's maturation over the last decade.

Pittsfield's Camping Ordinance Debate Resumes Tuesday

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Discussion about the proposed "Camping on Public Property" ordinance will continue at Tuesday's City Council meeting, with the ordinance and five directly related petitions on the nearly 1,000-page agenda.

Governor Opens Application for Career Technical Education Capital Funding for Schools

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced that applications are now open for comprehensive high schools and career technical schools to apply for $60 million in Career Technical Education (CTE) program capital grants.    This multi-year funding will support over 2,000 new CTE seats through expansion of existing and new career tech programs, as well as for the purchase and installation of training equipment.    The capital grants, made possible through Fair Share funding, will enable new programs that meet the workforce needs of regional employers.
