DA Warns Public After Gym Thefts and Check Fraud

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office is warning of an active crime ring targeting gyms and yoga studios across the Northeast.    Members of the crime ring are breaking into parked, often unlocked, cars at these locations and stealing wallets and other personal items.   District Attorney Shugrue urges the public to always lock their vehicles, even at home or in familiar locations.   "We live in a small, trusting community. In such a small county, many of us are familiar with the businesses we frequent and the places we routinely visit," District Attorney Shugrue said. Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day is being observed Monday, Oct. 13. As Columbus Day, it commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on Oct. 12, 1492. As Indigenous Peoples Day, it commemorates the harm to their cultures and communities that followed Columbus' arrival. 

Columbus' voyage had been celebrated on significant anniversaries but did not become an official holiday until it was recognized by Colorado in 1905. It was declared a federal holiday in 1937.

West Stockbridge Opens Dog Park West Stockbridge held a grand opening for its new dog park on Oct. 5. Michael Bolognino, chair of the Friends of West Stockbridge Dog Park, estimated that 100 people attended the opening, along with 50 or so dogs.   The Berkshire Humane Society attended and offered loose leash training, Irie's Pet Pantry also attended and received donations, and a couple of local businesses sold their dog-related wares.   Some funds were also raised to contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the park.   The park is located on 21 State Line Road.   Fairview Hospital Purchases

BHS Implements Color-Coded System for Respiratory Illness Measures

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In anticipation of the expected rise in respiratory illness during the fall and winter seasons, Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) has implemented its three-tiered virus alert level system, which will determine how the organization manages masking, visitor access, and testing and whether staff, patients and visitors will require masking.    The fall and winter seasons are expected to see a rise in the number of cases of Influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) at Berkshire Medical Center, Fairview Hospital, North Adams Regional Hospital and BHS Physician Practices. On Monday, with temperatures nearing 80, the Public Works and Utilities subcommittee heard about the city's snow removal plans for the 2025-2026 season.

Gov. Healey Releases Dashboard Detailing Federal Cuts

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have cut $3.7 billion in funding from Massachusetts' budget, and a $1.4 million toward a local digital equity effort is on the chopping block. 

On Tuesday, Gov. Maura Healey's administration released an updated dashboard detailing the impact of federal funding cuts on the state over the next several fiscal years.
