PITTSFIELD, Mass — High school students are invited to get a jump on their college careers by attending a virtual information session on Berkshire Community College (BCC)'s Early College Program. Three one-hour sessions are offered: Wednesday, November 29, 6:30 pm Wednesday, December 6, 5 pm Saturday, December 9, 10 am To register for a free session, visit www.berkshirecc.edu/early-college.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society will host a virtual lecture on the history of whaling captains of color with author, Skip Finley. In his award-winning book "Whaling Captains of Color, America's First Meritocracy," Finley covers such topics as Ambergris and rats, while intertwining the individual stories of more than fifty whaling masters of color, their adventures, successes, and struggles. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After some advocacy from local and federal entities, Pittsfield Community Television has added closed captioning for cable viewers.
The organization implemented closed captioning for certain programs about a year ago but came to a roadblock when the captioning was coming through on streaming but not through cable boxes. It was restored after a complaint reached the hands of the Federal Communications Commission.
Members of the Cable Advisory Committee agreed that this is a "great thing" as it provides better access to people who are hard of hearing and people who prefer to have the sound off.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) is proposing to add new evening bus service to additional weekday and Saturday fixed routes. At the October 26, 2023 meeting, the BRTA Advisory Board voted to proceed with a public comment period to gather customer feedback on the proposed additional service. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A special City Council meeting was called on Thursday to discuss the fiscal year 2022 audits. It was found that the city over-reported more than $250,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds, which alarmed some councilors and members of the public. "We found that you over-reported two hundred something thousand expenditures between two quarters," Tom Scanlon of Scanlon and Associates explained. "It was with the Ashley Water Treatment Plant, I believe." The facility's chemical storage building was allocated $4.6 million and is supposed to be completed this season. BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced the appointment of Molly Jacobson as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Corporation. Chris Brown scored the final four points of the game at the foul line to give NBSA a 71-68 win over Giardina and Bressett PC in the A Division final at Drury High School. BOSTON — Emergency Assistance Director Lt. General Scott Rice provided an update on next steps for the state's emergency family shelter system as it approaches its capacity limit. PITTSFIELD, Mass. The Board of Health on Wednesday voted to demolish a condemned multifamily that was destroyed by a fire last year. The panel voted to order a demolition for 91 to 93 Orchard Street, which suffered a two-alarm structure fire on July 4, 2022, that charred the front porch and front portion of the home. It was condemned a few days later. Director of Public Health Andy Cambi explained that the department identifies properties with code violations that impair health and safety as condemned and after a year, they have the option to bring the property to demolish.
