MDAR Receives Funds to Increase Seniors' Access to Locally Grown Produce

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) announced today that Massachusetts has been awarded $1,410,222 to expand the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).    The award was granted by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.     The $1.4 million grant award will allow MDAR to increase the level of benefit for seniors participating in the SFMNP from $25 to $50. The increase in funding will also allow MDAR to serve an additional 2,300 seniors and disabled individuals over the next two years.    "This award is a win for

Pittsfield City Council Tackles Diversity Referrals, Thrift Shop License

PITTSFIELD, Mass. The City Council tackled around a dozen agenda items in two and a half hours on Tuesday.

While a large portion of the conversation was centered around Councilor Karen Kalinowsky's attempt to place a question on the Nov. 7 ballot about the reconfiguration of North Street, there were several referrals and a Pawnbrokers and Secondhand Dealers License approval for a new second-hand shop.

Resident Alfred Shugrue plans to sell new and used merchandise at Other People's Stuff, located at 360 Tyler Street.  This includes electronics, jewelry, furniture, game systems, household items, toys, records, and books.

Berkshire Harm Reduction Implementing Narcan Boxes in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Hoping to save lives from opioid overdose, Berkshire Harm Reduction is bringing Narcan to the streets.   Program Manager Sarah DeJesus updated the Board of Health on Wednesday on the organization's efforts to place Narcan or Naloxone boxes in public places that are readily available for use.   The medicine, which is administered nasally, blocks opiate receptors in the nervous system.   "One of the recent initiatives that we became involved in is through the HEALing Communities Study, and it has a very ambitious goal to reduce overdose deaths by 40 percent in the next 18 months that the program is in existence," DeJesus said about

Pittsfield Council Sees Fourth Quarter ARPA Funding Uses

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — About $1.6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds were expended in the last quarter of 2022 with almost half being used to remedy negative economic impacts from the novel coronavirus.

About $742,000, or 46 percent, was spent in that category, and about $417,000, or 26 percent funded public health.  

Nineteen percent, about $296,000, went toward infrastructure, about $83,000 for revenue replacement and about $65,000 for administrative costs accounted for the remaining nine percent.

In 2022, there was $5.3 million in ARPA monies spent. Of the city's nearly $41 million allocation, about $38 million has been obligated.

Dalton Boards Amend Information Technology Services Budget

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board and Finance Committee voted to amend the Information Technology Services during their meetings this week.    The revised budget increases the budget 4.41 percent bringing the total budget consisting of expenses only in the amount of $71,000.    The previous budget was level funded from last year but the town's insurance agent has now developed requirements to maintain cyber security as part of the town's cybersecurity insurance.    This software will enable the town to have multi-factor authentication and endpoint detection and response so if there is a breach they can find where it came from.    The
