Pittsfield Council to Tackle Incentives, Grants, and Infrastructure Matters

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Tuesday's City Council meeting will be a mixed bag of routine matters, infrastructure requests, and a proposal for incentives to support a housing development.

After receiving support from the Subcommittee on Community and Economic Development, an order to amend the Housing Development Zone and for a 10-year tax increment exemption for 100 Wendell Ave. will come back to the full body.

Both items are for the state Housing Development Incentive Program which aims to provide gateway cities with financial incentives to diversify the housing stock and facilitate economic growth in neighborhoods. Pittsfield was an early adopter and, to date, has approved

Unoccupied BRTA Vehicle Caught Fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority experienced an electrical fire on an unoccupied 2018 vintage full-sized transit vehicle while parked inside the Downing Parkway Maintenance Facility on the morning of Dec. 20, 2023.    According to a statement released by the BRTA, maintenance staff were alerted by smoke detectors within the parking garage, and everyone was safely evacuated from the building. The Pittsfield Fire Department arrived on scene and completely extinguished the fire.   Federal and state authorities were notified of the incident along with the vehicle manufacturer and the insurance carrier.   Currently, this investigation remains

Veteran Spotlight: Army Lt. John Shoemaker

John Shoemaker in Vietnam.  NATICK, Mass. — An absolute honor to interview John Shoemaker for this week's Veteran Spotlight.    Born in Fitchburg, he attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated with a bachelor in business studies in management before enlisting in the Army in 1968.   He would go onto serve his country for four years as a combat platoon leader and company commander in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade of the "Americal" Division in Chu Lai. He completed his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, La., and Airborne and Officer Candidate School Training at Fort Benning, Ga.,

Miss Hall's School Completes 'Historic' Fundraising Campaign

Governor Names Executive Director of Domestic Violence Council

BOSTON — Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. National Grid Supports Home Heating and Utility Emergency Aid in Mass

Governor Releases State Financial Aid Form

BOSTON?— Today, the Healey-Driscoll Administration took a step forward in expanding access to higher education for all Massachusetts residents by launching the new Massachusetts Application for State Financial Aid (MASFA). 

The Department of Higher Education released the form on its website, which will allow currently enrolled undocumented college students in Massachusetts to apply for state need-based financial aid for the first time. Students can access the application at mass.edu/MASFA.

Avian Influenza Detected in Massachusetts

BOSTON - The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources' (MDAR) Division of Animal Health is informing the public that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in Barnstable County. MDAR and its partner agencies depopulated and disposed of a non-commercial, mixed-species backyard flock (non-poultry).

Birds on the affected premise exhibited clinical signs consistent with HPAI and tested positive for the disease. 

MDAR advises backyard and commercial poultry owners to practice strong biosecurity measures to prevent domestic poultry from having contact with wild birds, their feathers, and droppings. The HPAI virus continues

BCC Holds Pinning Ceremony for Nursing Graduates

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) held a traditional pinning ceremony for 28 graduates of the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program on Thursday, Jan. 18 at the Robert Boland Theatre on the main campus.     The wearing of the school pin symbolizes the right to serve others, signifying the acceptance of the responsibilities of the practice of nursing and the educational preparation of the wearer.
