PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city was awarded a $500,000 Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant to make improvements to Pontoosuc Lake Park. The project will construct a shoreline promenade walkway with seating, picnic tables, an ADA pathway, and a kayak/ canoe launch will be built. The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $13 million for park improvements and open space acquisitions across Massachusetts.  PITTSFIELD, Mass.—Community members gathered at the Polish Falcon Club last week to hear the proposed plans for the Bel Air Dam Removal. The two-century-old dam has been an area of concern for over a decade due to its deterioration and contamination. AECOM Associate Vice President and Project Manager Jennifer Doyle-Breen said if the structure collapses it could mean trouble downstream, creating hazardous conditions. "It is upstream of several businesses, residents and roads and failure of the dam could cause loss of life in substantial damages to infrastructure due to what is downstream of it.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — For the first time since the pandemic, Mildred Elley held an in-person Pinning Celebration at the Italian American Club on Thursday for the graduates of the Practical Nursing Program. The school graduated 27 from the 18 month Practical Nursing Program, however, only three were able to attend the celebration. Department of Nursing Chair Dr. Patricia Newman explained the history of the pinning ceremony, a tradition dating back to the Crusades of the 12th century when the Knights Hospitallers tended to and cared for the injured and suffering Crusaders. CHESHIRE, Mass. — A Pittsfield teenager is facing multiple charges including driving under the influence after crashing her car into the State Police barracks. According to State Police, the 17-year-old was traveling southbound on Route 8 at about 6:22 p.m. on Saturday when her 2000 Nissan Altima left the road and struck the east front corner of Cheshire barracks. The girl and her passenger, another 17-year-old Pittsfield girl, were taken to Berkshire Medical Center for minor injuries. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The streets were somber and red, white and blue on Friday evening as community members welcomed Air Force Staff Sgt. Jacob Galliher home. "I think Pittsfield is proving what it's always been," Mayor-elect Peter Marchetti said. "When there is a tragedy or when there is a need to rally together, Pittsfield rallies together and it makes me proud to be a Pittsfielder today."
