Pittsfield Looks Forward to New, Improved Streetscape Maintenance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The state of disarray in downtown medians stemmed from a problem with a contractor who won the bid and then was terminated twice.

Earlier this month, members of the City Council were outraged at overgrown medians and flowerbeds in the downtown area and referred several petitions on city maintenance to Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales.

The lack of care was attributed to issues with contracted work, being short-staffed, and weather struggles. The overgrowth has since been cleared and a new partnership between the city and local organizations will take the reins.

Pittsfield ZBA Grants Casella Permit for Waste Transfer Facility

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Zoning Board of Appeals calls Casella's planned redevelopment of the former trash incinerator an improvement to the site.

Last week, the panel approved a special permit to allow a waste transfer facility at the site on 500 Hubbard Ave. Casella Waste Management purchased the waste transfer facility on Hubbard Avenue from Community Eco Power LLC, which filed for bankruptcy in 2021 and has demolished it for redevelopment into a waste transfer station.

The owners say the trash will be brought to the facility and transferred away daily. Concerns that were voiced about the project include odor and impacts to the surrounding area but Casella says the new

Berkshire County Historical Society Celebrates Plant a Tree Day

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Join the Berkshire County Historical Society on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5:30 pm as they celebrate Plant a Tree Day with a ceremonial planting of a young American elm "Jefferson" on Park Square.    The tree will be planted to honor the Berkshires' first known environmentalist Lucretia Williams. Saboteurs Earn Narrow Win in Northern Berkshire Fall Hoop League

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Jake Hall had a double-double to lead the Saboteurs to a one-point win in the Northern Berkshire Sports Academy fall league B Division on Sunday.   Hall scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 66-65 win over Adelson and Company at the Armory.   Dave Crtielli scored 13 points, and Sam Larabee finished with nine points and eight rebounds.   For Adelson, Jon Gregory scored a game-high 29 points and collected 12 rebounds. Nick Lewis scored 12 points.   Workaholics 60, Elegant Stiches 40 Amont David scored 16 points, and Darian Vidal finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Harrington Earns League Honor at Stonehill College

Pittsfield High School graduate Kellie Harrington last week was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for her performance as a first-year harrier at Stonehill College.   Harrington placed 21st and helped the Skyhawks finish second as a team at her first collegiate race, a 5-kilometer event at the 41-team UMass Dartmouth Invitational.   Harrington and her Stonehill teammates compete this week at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.   In Colchester, Vt., on Friday, Abby Kittler (Pittsfield) and the St. Michael's cross country team hosted what is believed to be the only same-distance men's and women's event in the country, second annual the Equality

Mayor Tyer Recognizes BEAT for International Award

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Environmental Action Team was applauded in council chambers on Tuesday for its various efforts that led to an international award.

"BEAT has worked tirelessly to address significant environmental issues that affect the quality of life for Pittsfield residents as well as the animal and plant life found within its borders," Mayor Linda Tyer said.

Joined by Executive Director Jane Winn, Tyer read a proclamation to the council and attendees.

In June, the nonprofit received a prestigious stewardship award at the International Conference of Ecology and Transportation in Burlington, Vt., for its work protecting and reconnecting wildlife

Pittsfield Police Honor K9 Partners in New Monument

The monument outside the police station names the city's late and retired K9s and their handlers. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police officers saluted the department's "best friends to the end" during a K9 monument unveiling on Tuesday.

Fixed in front of the Pittsfield Police Station, the statue honors 13 former K9s dating back to 1976. Blue roses were placed for each pup next to the bronze shepherd that sits proudly on top.

The department's three active K9s Jango, Rico and Apollo were also honored along with Officer Winston the comfort dog.

Pittsfield Charter Panel Hears Opposition to Charter Objection

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The newly reconvened Charter Review Committee began its work last week with a conversation about the charter objection, a motion that has delayed votes and created a stir in council chambers over the last term.

Councilor at Large Peter White presented a petition that asked "Should the charter objection be eliminated or otherwise amended?" Under the rule, if a single member present objects to the taking of the vote it is postponed until the next meeting of the city council.

Berkshires Receive National Health Emergency Dislocated Worker Grant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — To help address the crisis, the U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of more than $1 million in funding for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development to address the impact of the opioid crisis on the local workforce in Berkshire County.   Administered by the department's Employment and Training Administration, the National Health Emergency Dislocated Worker Grant will support Massachusetts in its efforts to employ people in positions as recovery coaches, harm reduction specialists, peer navigators and community health workers.
