Dalton Public Library Searching for New DirectorBy Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff 01:07PM / Saturday, August 26, 2023 | | DALTON, Mass. — The public library started the search for a new director during its meeting on Wednesday night. Library director Robert DiFazio's last day was Friday, Aug. 25. He gave notice four weeks ago. Although DiFazio said loved working at the library, when a position at Wahconah Regional High School's library opened he jumped at the opportunity because the schedule better aligns with his personal life. "I live right in town, you know, less than half a mile away. So, I'm definitely going to be a regular library user," DiFazio said. "...[Kim Gwilt] has been a great assistant director for years and I definitely 0 Comments Read More >> |
@themarket: Markets in a Topping ProcessBy Bill Schmick, 10:37AM / Saturday, August 26, 2023 | | Fed Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that he was "prepared to raise rates further" at the Jackson Hole Symposium this week. Investors who were hoping to hear a more dovish outlook were disappointed. The market walked away with an understanding that interest rates had two paths forward. The best case was flat for a longer period, or higher if inflation persists. About last year's address, Powell said "The message is the same: It is the Fed's job to bring inflation down to our 2 percent goal, and we will do so." Beyond Friday's event, it was a slow week with little volume and plenty of volatility. Second-quarter corporate earnings in the retail 0 Comments Read More >> |

Wahconah Park Committee Focuses on Grandstand Over TurfBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff 06:29AM / Saturday, August 26, 2023
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Deliberations about artificial turf versus natural grass at Wahconah Park will go on the back burner for now as efforts are focused on the grandstand. Chair Earl Persip III said the Wahconah Park Restoration Committee got lost in "turf talk" for too long when it was not ready for the conversation. "I think we let it get a little out of control," he said at Thursday's meeting. "If you remember, our task was to come up with a grandstand replacement or renovation plan. It really didn't speak of the field. I am glad we did have that conversation but I think the natural grass versus a turf field is a phase two part of this overall

The Retired Investor: Automobile Becoming a Luxury ItemBy Bill Schmick, 04:14PM / Friday, August 25, 2023 | | Henry Ford must be rolling over in his grave. His vision of making an automobile that would be accessible to all Americans was embraced by the car industry for decades. That era has come to an end. The demise of the reasonably-priced auto is happening before our eyes. The last car with an average price of less than $20,000, the Mitsubishi Mirage, a compact, is being discontinued. It joins models such as the Honda Fit, Chevrolet Spark, and Volkswagen Beetle in the graveyard of small, affordable cars. Over the last few years, Americans for the most part have forsaken "small" for "big" vehicles like the SUV, pickups, and crossovers. For every Mirage sale in 0 Comments Read More >> |

Lanesborough Public Safety Committee May Offer Three Facility ProposalsBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff 05:14AM / Friday, August 25, 2023
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Based on public feedback, the Public Safety Building Committee is looking to offer residents three possible scenarios for a new facility. These include just a police station, a combined police and emergency medical services complex, and a complete facility with police, EMS, and the Fire Department. Chair Mark Siegars has doubts about the addition of the Fire Department into the proposals, as the town rejected a $6 million police and EMS proposal earlier this year and adding fire would significantly increase the cost, but residents have expressed an interest in it. He pointed to other Berkshire County communities such as Williamstown, which is building a

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district will soon use a tiered cell phone policy that grants more freedom as grades progress. It will go into play for the new school year that starts next week. Superintendent Joseph Curtis agreed to return in about a month with an update on the implementation and include updates in his monthly report. "Teachers and educators have seen an increase in students distracted by phones in the classroom," Deputy Superintendent Marisa Mendoza said. "And so, in partnership

"Honestly, I had another championship game tonight [in Boston], and I chose to come to this one instead of the other one becuase I just wanted to beat these guys one more time," Cross said on Wednesday. Mission accomplished, as his Giardina and Bresett PC squad defeated Team DB, 78-60, in the John Giorgi Summer Basketball League A Division title game at the Armory.
