Pittsfield Summer Playground Program10:40AM / Wednesday, July 05, 2023 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development has announced the return of the Parks Playground Program at three city parks this summer. The Summer Playground Program offers a variety of recreation activities to Pittsfield children ages 6 to 13 at no cost. Playground Leaders create safe, supervised and fun-filled environments with activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and nature activities. The program begins Monday, July 10 and runs through Friday, August 18. Alleged Child Rapist To Remain in Custody 08:27AM / Wednesday, July 05, 2023 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Donald Monsees, 71 years of age, who was accused of child rape among other charges will continue ot be held in custody on $250,000 bail. On Friday, June 30 a bail hearing was held for Donald Monsees, 71 years of age, in Berkshire Superior Court following 180-day hold expired. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is seeing increased interest in this year's election and with just a few weeks until signatures are due, many candidates have been certified. As of late last week, new faces have taken out papers for the mayoral and at-large, Ward 2 and Ward 6 council races. There are now five parties interested in replacing Mayor Linda Tyer, who announced that she will not be seeking re-election earlier this year. David Webber has taken out papers for mayor, joining John Krol, Craig Gaetani, Karen Kalinowsky, and Peter Marchetti on the list. Not much can be found on the new candidate from public records. Historical Commission Gets Booth at Dalton Day EventBy Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff 05:37AM / Wednesday, July 05, 2023 | | DALTON, Mass. — The Historical Commission has decided to participate in the upcoming Dalton Day event on Saturday, July 15. The commission will be selling Fitch-Hoose House tiles, bandanas, books and Dalton bicentennial plates, keychains, bracelets, fans and magnets. Due to staffing issues, the historic Fitch-Hoose House Museum, on 6 Gulf Road, will be closed that day although a sign will encourage potential museumgoers to attend Dalton Day. The commissioners hope the event will provide more exposure to the 177-year-old two-story house to encourage more visitors. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Friday approved three appropriations in the 11th hour of fiscal 2023 after they were derailed earlier in the week. These were orders to transfer and appropriate $620,000 from free cash to the Department of Public Services for snow and ice removal, to transfer $75,000 from retained sewer earnings to the Department of Public Utilities Wastewater Division for sludge handling, and to transfer and appropriate $850,000 from free cash to the Police Department for scheduled overtime. Berkshire Humane Society Overwhelmed With Cats01:41PM / Sunday, July 02, 2023 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Humane Society is in need of supplies, food, donations and, especially, adoptees for more than 150 cats. The nonprofit organization is asking animals lovers to help with an escalating situation by donating cash or goods, adopting a homeless animal or sponsoring an animal’s adoption, providing a specialized foster home or volunteering. The shelter is taking $100 off dog and cat adoption fees through July 15 in an effort to move animals out of the crowded shelter.
