Crosby Academy Students Read Poems on North Street

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — At Hotel on North on Friday, June 23 at noon, nine Crosby Educational Academy fifth- graders will celebrate their graduation with a poetry reading of original work and the unveiling of 60 poetry tree tags on North Street.    "Writing poetry has been such an empowering experience for our students. It gives them confidence in their academics and lets them know, Yes, I am smart, yes I can do this," said Tracy Kelleher, Dean of Students of Crosby Academy.   Over the past school year, Crosby Educational Academy fourth and fifth graders wrote poetry every week as part of The Mastheads' poetry-in-schools program, Fireside, which provides

County Youth Soccer League Wraps Up Spring Season

LENOX, Mass. -- Three Berkshire County Youth Soccer League teams have qualified for the Massachusettts Tournament of Champions this weekend in Lancaster.   Two girls teams and one boys team are advancing to the state tourney based on their performance throughout the spring: the 7th- and 8th-grade Lenox Gold girls, the 5th- and 6th-grade North Adams Breakers girls and the 5th- and 6th-grade Williamstown Vipers boys.   The BCYSL held its season-ending tournament on Saturday at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School, with championships decided in seven different groups.   Winners included:   Boys 5/6 B-Cup - Williamstown 1, Lenox 1 (Williamstown wins on penalty kicks). Closure of Holmes Road bridge While Repairs Are Underway

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will begin repair on the Holmes Road bridge starting on June 23, 2023.    During this work, the Holmes Road bridge, between 650 and 677 Holmes Road, will be closed. No thru traffic will be allowed.   The city recommends that drivers seek alternate routes. Traffic traveling southbound on Holmes Road will be detoured towards Pomeroy Avenue, Crofut Street and then to Route 7/20. Traffic traveling northbound should utilize Route 7/20.   While this project is underway, construction work will occur Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The project is slated to be complete by Aug 25 pending no

Pittsfield Educators Push for Stricter Phone Policy

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Staff in the public schools say phone use is out of control and they want a policy to address it.  

Educators cited issues with excessive phone use disrupting education, social and emotional health, and safety during last Wednesday's School Committee meeting. Chair William Cameron agreed that it is an urgent issue and is placing it on the next meeting agenda.

Dalton Fills Vacant Town Planner Position

DALTON, Mass. — After a long search and salary revision, the town has filled the vacant town planner position.     The post has been vacant since last October and town meeting voted to increase its salary by 11.26 percent to $58,335 when it failed to attract candidates.    The Select Board during its meeting last week approved the appointment of the new Janko Tomasic, who is expected to start on July 10.   Tomasic has lived in Western Massachusetts for most of his life and earned his master's degree from the University of Massachusetts' Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning.    One thing that stood out in

Residents Ask for Preservation of Wahconah Park's Hometown Feel

Parks Commissioner Simon Muil thinks the park should retain its 'rough around the edges' appeal.

Pittsfield Council OKs TIF for Bousquet Sport

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council last week approved a 10-year tax increment financing agreement for Bousquet Sport that will relieve about $215,000 in real estate taxes — but not without pushback.

Mild Drought Conditions Declared in Berkshire County

Governor Announces Creation of Community Climate Bank
