Dalton Officials Mull Dissolution of the Fire District

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board seems open to the possibility of merging the Fire District with town government.    The conversation stems from observations Chairman Joseph Diver made at the annual Fire District meeting and from opinions he has heard from residents.    Half of the emergency services comes from the town and half from the Fire District, Diver said at the time, and there are two separate annual meetings for taxation that some residents may not know about.   The board took up discussion on Monday night about the ambulance service, which along with the Fire and Water departments is under the purview of the independent Board of Water

Pittsfield YMCA Celebrates Completion of $12.4M Renovation

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Planners say "child care is the engine" of the Berkshire Family YMCA's $12.4 million overhaul.

The expanded facility includes a new infant room, an additional toddler room, an expanded preschool area, a science, technology, arts and math (STEAM) space, and a gross motor skills space.

This has opened over two dozen enrollment slots and increased child-care services by 40 percent.

Governor Appoints Director of Rural Affairs

BOSTON — Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll announced Massachusetts Senator Anne Gobi will join their administration as the new Director of Rural Affairs in the Executive Office of Economic Development.     According to a press release, in this new role created by the Healey-Driscoll Administration, Gobi will serve as a dedicated advocate and ombudsman cultivating economic development within rural communities. She will ensure that the needs of rural and regional economies are incorporated into the economic development plan being developed by the Executive Office of Economic Development and will be responsible for coordinating with secretariats

Pittsfield Parks Commission OKs Summer Events

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city will see a summer of events in recreation, fitness, and well-being. 

On Tuesday the Parks Commission approved a variety of happenings for the warm months including the well-known Live on The Lake, which will happen on Wednesdays from July 5 to August 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.   The community concert series has been held on the shores of Onota Lake for over 20 years, but it took a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and returned the following year.    "In 2002 we teamed up with Greylock Federal Credit Union to create Live on The Lake, a free community concert series to be held Wednesday evenings on the shores of Onota Lake

Dalton Talking Fire Chief, Ambulance Service Monday Night

DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Water Commissioners is meeting in executive session at 4 p.m. on Monday to discuss an employee matter not dealing with professional competence.      Fire Chief James Peltier was placed on administrative leave earlier this month; he did not respond to a request for comment over the weekend but had confirmed to The Berkshire Eagle that Monday's meeting was about him. Berkshire Athenaeum Expands World Languages Collection

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield's Public Library, invites members of the city's Spanish speaking population to browse and borrow from the library's new Spanish Bookshelf.    The library has just added more than 75 Spanish titles for adults, building on a group of over 150 Spanish titles for children. These new books include something for many reader interests: general fiction, horror, historical fiction, magical realism, mystery & thriller. Mill Town Seeking TIF for Bousquet Sport

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mill Town Capital is requesting a 10-year tax increment financing agreement for the redevelopment of the former Berkshire West into Bousquet Sport. 

On Tuesday, the City Council will be presented with a TIF that is expected to save the investment firm about $215,000 in real estate taxes over a decade, starting at 100 percent in fiscal 2025 and decreasing to 10 percent by fiscal 2034.

"Bousquet Sport, located at 100 Dan Fox Drive in Pittsfield, will feature a multi-purpose sports facility that will include six pickleball courts, new locker rooms, cardio and fitness equipment," Mayor Linda Tyer wrote in an order.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Williamstown's Alex White was the first runner across the finish line at Sunday's MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon on the Ashuwilticook Trail.   White maintained a 6 minute, 26 second per mile pace over the 26.2 mile course from Pittsfield to Adams and back.   He reached the finish line in 2:48.42.41 to finish 5-1/2 minutes ahead of the rest of the other 72 runners who finished the event's marathon division.   The fastest finisher in the marathon was Stephen Gulley of Billingham, the event's lone hand pedaler, who finished in 2:20:05.36.   The first female runner across the finish line was Assonet's Hailey Desmarais

MassDOT Public Comment Period for Draft Capital Investment Plan

BOSTON —?The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced the public comment period for the rolling draft Fiscal Year 2024-2028 five-year Capital Investment Plan (CIP) will be held from Thursday, May 18, through Friday, June 9.     This five-year draft plan includes approximately $15.4 billion in planned transportation investments.  The CIP guides how the Commonwealth prioritizes and funds local and statewide transportation projects, and determines funding for infrastructure including railroad, transit, accessibility upgrades, roadway and bridge improvements, municipal projects, and for the needs of Regional Transit Authorities

FEMA Awards Over $4M to MassDOT for COVID-19 Precautions

BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for the cost of disinfecting its facilities to continue operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.   The $4,057,253 Public Assistance grant will reimburse the department for the cost of providing electrostatic sprayers to perform facility disinfection at 25 locations between March 2020 and December 2021.   MassDOT also contracted for facility disinfection at all 25 locations, as well as the installation of plexiglass shields to prevent the spread of the virus.   "FEMA is pleased to be
