Letter: Kamala Harris' Visit Was for the MoneyLetter to the Editor, 03:00PM / Monday, August 05, 2024 | |
To the Editor: I hope the Harris campaign thanked iBerkshires for the free advertising you gave them about her visit to Pittsfield for a lavish fundraiser at the Colonial Theatre. Make no mistake, Kamala didn't come to the Berkshires because she cares about what average people are struggling with in the 413 area code — she came because privileged followers donated $1.4 million. I am under no illusion that she will keep us out of World War III, curtail the impending climate catastrophe, raise the national minimum wage, significantly reduce crushing student debt, or fight to get us Medicare for All. She takes big money from superPACs including the American Israel Public Affairs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The $20 million allocated to demolish the Bel Air Dam will expire at the end of the year if a contractor is not chosen. A Notice of Intent application from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's Office of Dam Safety was continued to Aug. 22 due to a missing water quality certificate. This was an expected move but planners wanted to begin a conversation due to the tight deadline. "The $20 million expires at the end of the year so that's the the hurdle we're up against," Project Manager Jennifer Doyle-Breen told the Conservation Commission on Thursday. "We need to have a construction contract signed by the

Dalton Fire District Explores Obtaining Ladder Truck DonationBy Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff 05:05AM / Monday, August 05, 2024 | | DALTON, Mass. — Fire Chief Christian Tobin may have found the department a ladder truck while vacationing in the state of Florida. Tobin is still very early in discussions with the North Collier Fire Rescue District in Naples, Florida, regarding a potential donation of a 1998 Pierce Quantum 107-foot aerial ladder truck. The Board of Water Commission voted during its meeting on Tuesday to allow Tobin to discuss the possibility with the North Collier Fire Rescue District and to return to the board with a written offer. "The biggest trouble is we didn't budget for this. So, if it doesn't come free, we don't have the money. We 0 Comments Read More >> |

A bird's-eye view of the Proprietor's property. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Abutters are passionate about the Proprietor's Lodge not causing any further disruption on the lakefront. The Conservation Commission on Thursday continued a notice of intent application for a private, seasonal dock at the lakefront restaurant. A NOI for an identical project was denied by the commission in 2019 and the applicant appealed it with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, who then issued a superseding order of conditions. That order has now expired. "We have enough problems in our neighborhood thanks to Proprietor's," Waubeek Road resident Linda

@theMarket: Has the Fed Waited Too Long?By Bill Schmick, 12:31PM / Saturday, August 03, 2024 | | "Be careful what you wish for" is an often-used quote. In the case of the financial markets, all year long, traders and the Fed wished for a slower economy, less employment, and therefore a decline in inflation. Now that we have it, the markets don't like it. Earlier in the week, the bulls could not have asked for a more dovish Federal Open Market Committee meeting. While the central bank maintained its higher-for-longer stance, it hinted that September could see the first of several interest rate cuts. Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank, said it will depend on economic data over the next several weeks. "If that test is met, a reduction in our 0 Comments Read More >> |
