Pittsfield's 2nd Rail Trail Extension Coming SoonBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The second extension of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail southward through the city is on schedule for completion in the fall.
This will connect the leg that comes out on Crane Avenue to Merrill Road, paving the way for further extensions. A paved parking lot and path can be seen from the road with construction elements on the site.
"The construction of the Pittsfield Rail Trail project began in October of 2023 and is expected to be completed on time in the fall," a representative from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation confirmed.
The 0.4-mile extension will go underneath the Dalton Avenue bridge, travel behind the Shops at Unkamet Brook

On Sunday, two back-to-back gems turned the tide in a 3-0 Section 1 Tournament title game win over Holden. It was a 0-0 game, and Pittsfield had not had a baserunner in the top of the fourth when Holden used an Owen Williams double and a hit batter to get runners to second and third with two out. AUGUSTA, Maine -- Norwalk, Conn., scored eight runs in the top of the fifth to break open a scoreless game and went on to a 10-0 win over the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 16-year-old All-Stars at the New England Regional on Sunday. Dylan Izzi went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs for Norwalk, which held Pittsfield to four hits. Brenden Socie had two of those hits, including a double. Eddie Ferris also doubled, and Sam Glcokner had a hit in the loss. Glockner also threw an inning of scoreless relief. Pittsfield finishes pool play with a record of 1-2. DALTON, Mass. — Asbestos abatement in the police station is scheduled for Monday, but more work still needs to be done. The Select Board was notified of the safety concerns in the police station, located in the Town Hall basement, during its meeting on May 28. Issues in the station included plumbing, asbestos, mold, ventilation, mice, water damage, heating, and damage to cells. During the meeting, it became clear that the Town Hall basement is not a viable long-term location for the station, but short-term resolutions need to be implemented to make the space safe for its staff until the town can find a permanent location. LENOX, Mass. — U.S. Rep. Richard Neal joined state Rep. William "Smitty" Pignatelli this week to announce a $750,000 earmark for the Lenox Town Hall Restoration Project. "It's phenomenal," said Rosemary Wessel of the Berkshire Environmental Action Team. "To actually see the physical proof of a peaker plant not just shut down but removed is just more than we really expected and it's really great."
