Community Hero of the Month: Christopher Keegan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire County Toys For Tots coordinator Christopher Keegan has been nominated as September's Community Hero of the Month.    The Community Hero of the Month series recognizes individuals and organizations that have significantly impacted their community. The series is in partnership with Haddad Auto and will run for the next two months.    Every morning on Christmas, thousands of kids, from newborns to 14-year-olds, will have presents to open because of the hard work of Keegan and his team.    Keegan is dedicated to the Marine Corps core values of respect, discipline, and camaraderie and hopes to instill them in

State Awarded $1M For Registered Apprenticeships

BOSTON — Today, at the Massachusetts Apprenticeship Council meeting, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced that the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) awarded $1,052,584 for Massachusetts to support Registered Apprenticeship as a training and employment strategy for emerging industries.

This awarded USDOL grant builds on the Healey-Driscoll Administration's commitment to expand Registered Apprenticeship, a proven workforce strategy that combines technical and on-the-job training for workers, delivers industry-recognized credentials, and increases access to progressive wage increases and good-paying jobs.

Dalton Sets Special Town Meeting for Oct. 9

DALTON, Mass. — There will be a special town meeting at Nessacus Regional Middle School on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. to vote on four articles.    The first article requests the voters approve decreasing the fiscal year debt exclusion line item by $48,668.   Article 2 asks to transfer a sum from capital stabilization to cover the cost of the final engineering and construction of the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation system for the Town Hall's main floor and the police station in its basement.   The exact amount needed for the project has yet to be determined. A week after the U.S. central bank's policy shift, Chinese authorities unleashed their monetary policy dragon. The move caught world financial markets by surprise and launched the Shanghai Composite index up more than 9 percent in three days.   The People's Bank of China (PBOC) launched its largest stimulus package since the pandemic. BRPC Outlines Busy Year Addressing Region's Needs

RICHMOND, Mass.— Berkshire Regional Planning Commission had a busy year addressing the region's needs through a dozen cross-cutting programs.

Pittsfield Police Arrest Maine Murder Suspect

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police arrested a man on a warrant for murder in Maine after a pursuit Friday that prompted Pittsfield schools to enact a brief lockdown.

Keith Thorpe, 42, of Bangor is wanted in the homicide of 39-year-old Virginia Cookson, who was found dead in her home Wednesday. 

Police posted on social media that officers were actively tracking a stolen vehicle from in a neighboring state earlier in the morning. Thorpe was caught near Euclid Avenue after making contact with a cruiser.

Thorpe is also being charged with numerous motor vehicle offenses and is expected to be arraigned at Pittsfield District Court and to extradited to Maine.
