Georgia 'Boula' Spring Niarchos

January 07, 2023

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  Georgia "Boula" Niarchos, 93, of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully on Jan. 7, 2023, in Shelburne, Vt.

She was born in Pittsfield on Feb. 23, 1929, to Diamanto "Desma" Betts Spring and was named after her father, George Spring, who died one month before her birth. Her friends and family affectionately called her Boula, which is believed to roughly mean ghost in Greek.

Georgia graduated in 1947 from Pittsfield High School, where she enjoyed being a cheerleader and focused on commercial business classes. She subsequently worked in banking for a few years before joining the former General Electric, where she had a 16-year career.

In 1951, she married Peter Thomas Niarchos. They celebrated 56 years together before he predeceased her on Nov. 25, 2007.

In 1967, Georgia "retired" from the workforce to raise her son. She dedicated the rest of her life to caring for him, her grandchildren and the rest of her extended family. She encouraged her family to be generous, kind, and compassionate, qualities passed down from her mother. Nothing was more important to Georgia than the relationships she had with the people she loved — family, friends and her wonderful neighbors on Meleca Avenue.

With her vibrant personality and welcoming nature, Georgia made friends everywhere she went. She loved to entertain, always offering a drink or a treat and putting on some music. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Tom Brady and professional tennis. She loved flowers, golf, a fresh cup of coffee, watching the snow fall, and hanging out at Electra's. Above all though, Georgia loved to dance, it was her favorite thing to do.

In 2020, she moved to Williston Place in Vermont to be able to spend more time with her grandchildren, frequently attending band concerts and baseball games, and treating everyone to dinners out.

Georgia was a communicant of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.

She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Pam Niarchos of Williston, Vt.; her grandchildren, Paige Niarchos and Mitchell Niarchos; many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her two brothers, James Spring and Michael Spring, and her sisters, Marina Giftos and Despina Giftos.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a short prayer service at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, and burial in Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Georgia's name to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or Project Hoeppner (projecthoeppner.com) in care of the funeral home.
