Alan Roy Will, 74

February 01, 2025

Alan Roy Will of Pittsfield, MA passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025 at Berkshire Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with respiratory illnesses.

Alan was born December 31, 1950 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, MA to Alphonse and Marion Will (Whittaker). Alan graduated from Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, MA, class of 1969. He was subsequently drafted into the Vietnam War. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in June of 1970 and enrolled at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, where his first son, Alan Thomas was born (Vickie Newman). Alan completed his service to this great country in June of 1974 and was honorably discharged. He was awarded The Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal and The National Defense Service Medal. Also during his service, he received a Certificate of Appreciation signed by President Richard Nixon.

Alan was employed at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield, MA, where he enrolled in, and completed the GE Toolmaker Apprenticeship Program. He would hold positions of increasing responsibility in the mold and tool making, and manufacturing industry, including QA Manager, Manufacturing Manager, and Plant Manager. He was instrumental in helping build several successful companies at Nucom, Starbase, and the Hansen Group. Alan traveled as far as Ludlow, MA to carve out a living here in Western, MA and loved his long commute to Ludlow. He would use that time in the car to listen to audiobooks, expand his knowledge, and to decompress on the way home to raise his two youngest boys, Geoffrey and Stephen (Gail Will-McQueston) in Pittsfield, MA.

Alan was predeceased by both parents but leaves behind three sons, who were his pride and joy, six beautiful sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly by his three sons: Alan Thomas Will of Dalton, MA (Kelly Parkington), Geoffrey Will of Shrewsbury, MA (Lauren Prezioso), and Stephen Will of Pittsfield, MA (Holya Ebiyatakyih). He will also be missed by his six sisters: Christina Bennett, Cynthia Bollinger (Andrew Tomlinson), Carol Will, Sharon Irwin (David), Diane Korza (Kenneth), and Wendy Will (Darryl Ventura). He will also be remembered by his longtime partner and friend Patricia Garvey, of Canaan, CT.

Alan was fiercely independent until the end and insisted on living at home until he could no longer manage it. He always did things his way. He sought to foster this independence in his sons, but when needed, he would provide reliable stability and protection to his "cubs". Dad had a creative side too, creating many beautiful paintings and wood carvings and had a great love of animals, which he has passed on to his three boys. He will be sorely missed by his Granddog, Raider Will (Alan Thomas). In afterlife, he will be reunited with Fire-Arrow and his cherished beagles Scraffy, Putters, Emma, and Lucy. Alan Roy was also a longtime friend of Bill W.'s.

A special thank you is in order for all who supported the family in this trying and difficult time. Thank you to Hospice Care of the Berkshires, Berkshire Medical Center Nurses, Veteran's Affairs (VA), Soldier On, and especially Lenwood (Woody) Vaspra for the wonderful ceremony honoring Dad's service in the Coast Guard. You all helped make our lives a little brighter during a dark time.

In accordance with Alan Roy Will's wishes, no memorial services will be held at this time.

In lieu of flowers, friends may choose to make a memorial contribution to one of the named organizations above through the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home. Checks should be made payable to the sender's organization of choice and mailed to 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
