Mary W. Smith, 78, of Locust Street, Brattleboro, Vt., formerly of Pittsfield, died Friday at her home.
Born in New Haven, Conn., on June 23, 1928, daughter of Charles and Fannie Pickett Wood, she was raised in Burlington, Vt., and was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School.
She also attended the University of Vermont, where she received a bachelor's degree in math and physics in 1950. She received a master's degree in education in 1970 from North Adams State College.
Mrs. Smith was a resident of Pittsfield for 25 years, and moved to Brattleboro in 1977. While there, she was employed by Brattleboro Area Middle School as an eighth grade math and science teacher, retiring in 1995.
She was a communicant of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church while in Pittsfield.
She was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, swimming at the Colonial Spa and reading.
She and her husband, Sanford Smith, were married Sept. 29, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He died June 5, 1971.
She leaves a daughter, Mary Ellen Barrett of West Chesterfield, N.H.; three sons, Charles Smith of Towson, Md., Thomas Smith of Torrington, Conn. and Sanford Smith IV of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Martha Sullivan of Jamesport, N.Y. and Lois Moran of Piscataway, N.J., and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Mass of the Eucharist for Mary W. Smith, who died Friday, June 23, 2006, will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Putney Road in Brattleboro, with the Rev. Thomas Brown, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Christ Church Cemetery in Guilford.
Memorial contributions in Mrs. Smith's name may be made to Rescue Inc., P.O. Box 593, Brattleboro, Vt., 05301. Arrangements are under the direction of ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME.
She also leaves a son-in-law, Timothy; a daughter-in-law, Melissa, and five grandchildren, Geoffrey Smith of Worcester, Thomas Smith of Torrington, Conn., Francis Smith of Towson, Md., Tanner Barrett and Madison Barrett, both of West Chesterfield.
