Richard Lawrence Basile, 82, of 53 Churchill Crest died yesterday at home.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 16, 1924, son of O. Lawrence and Louise Capucci Basile, he graduated from a Brooklyn high school in 1942.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees 1006th Naval Construction Battalion Detachment. He participated in the battles at Normandy and Sicily, where he received a commendation for outstanding performance in the landing of pontoon operations. In addition to a letter of commendation, he also received the European and American Theatre ribbons, a Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.
He was employed by International Telephone & Telegraph as a contract manager, and also for Grumman Aircraft for 39 years. While at Grumman, he was a project manager for the Apollo II Lunar Excursion Module, which brought the first manned spacecraft to the moon. He retired in 1988, moving to Pittsfield in 2002.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening.
He and his wife, the former Carmella Cosentino, were married Sept. 19, 1948.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Lorraine Russo of Oakdale, N.Y., and Laura McCarthy of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a son, Dr. Richard M. Basile of Richmond; a brother, Lawrence Basile of Staten Island, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Richard Lawrence Basile, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, will take place Saturday, July 8, at 8:30 a.m. from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Church with the Rev. John C. Salatino, pastor officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday, July 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Massachusetts chapter, in care of the funeral home.
He also leaves four grandchildren, Matthew and Marissa Hanaeur of Fort Wayne, Ind., Michael Basile and James O'Brien of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Basile, and sons-in-law Nicholas Russo and Thomas McCarthy. He also leaves five nephews and eight nieces, and his brothers-in-law, George Venezia of Huntsville, Ala., and Nicholas Cosentino of Paramus, N.J.
He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Venezia.
