John P. Kelly Jr., 83, of 65 Columbus Ave. died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on July 12, 1922, son of John P. Kelly Sr. and Mary McCormick Kelly, he was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He attended St. Michael's College in Vermont until 1942, when he was called into active duty.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 until being discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945. He was stationed in England, and flew 22 bombing missions over Germany.
He was employed by George's Package Store on Elm Street, retiring in 2000. Previously, he was employed by Taconic High School as a custodian, retiring in 1986 after 17 years of service. Prior to that, he was employed by the New York and New Haven Railroad for 24 years.
He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, and past president of the Custodian's Union. He was also a member of the board of directors at the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club, where he volunteered many hours of his time. He enjoyed reading.
His first wife, the former Mary Reinhold, died in 1949.
He and his wife, the former Hilda Ferreira Whalen, were married Feb. 20, 1982.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mary E. Anastasi of Lenox and Nancy A. Wilkinson of Pittsfield; three sons, Paul F. Kelly of Frostproof, Fla., Thomas J. Kelly of Pittsfield and Michael G. Kelly of Veronina, Ore.; four stepdaughters, Delores Dapper of Dalton, Deborah Goddeau of Foxborough, Pamela Pires of Waterbury, Conn., and Joyce Gallup of Cheshire; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A son, John R. "Skip" Kelly, died in 1989.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for John P. Kelly Jr., who died Sunday, July 9, 2006, will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, July 12, at 8 a.m. from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church celebrated the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club, care of the funeral home in his memory.
