In 1963, he joined the staff of Curtiss Breeding Service in Cary, Ill., as director of marketing, advertising and public relations.

McCarry served on the board of directors of the National Dairy Shrine, and from 1975 to 1980 was its secretary. He was the first recipient of the Dairy Shrine's 4-E Award in 1995. Iowa State University named him a distinguished alumnus in 1993.

In 2000, World Dairy Expo selected McCarry as Industry Person of the Year, and in 2001, the Dairy Shrine named him an Industry Pioneer. He was a member of the board of directors of the Draft Horse Association of America.

A noted speaker and writer on agricultural subjects, he published hundreds of articles in Hoard's Dairyman and other leading farm magazines. He also wrote for White Tops, the magazine of the Circus Fans of America, and served on the selection committee of the Circus Hall of Fame.

Following his retirement to Florida in 1983, McCarry served for nearly 20 years as a volunteer at the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford. He logged more than 10,000 volunteer hours and received the zoo's docent of the year award on three occasions.

He leaves his wife, the former Louise Busby of Deltona, Fla., whom he married in 1948; a son, Michael McCarry of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Ann Kilkuskie of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a brother, Charles McCarry of Otis, and three grandsons.
