Dr. George Grossman

July 14, 2006

Dr. George Grossman, 83, of 94 Sampson Parkway died Friday at Hillcrest Commons.

Born in Boston on Aug. 10, 1922, son of Richard and Jennie Freedman Grossman, he moved to Pittsfield at the age of 7 and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1940.

He also graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and, in 1946, from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School.

Dr. Grossman opened his dental practice in September 1946 and retired in April 1993.

Throughout his career he was a member of the dental staff of Berkshire Medical Center, where he worked with interns in the dental clinic. He was also the school dentist for the town of Richmond for many years. At the time of his retirement, he had been a member of the Massachusetts Dental Association of 47 years.

He was treasurer of the Jewish Community Center for many years, a member of B'nai B'rith and an active board member of Knesset Israel Synagogue. During the 1940s and 1950s, he showed movies weekly to nursing home residents through the Bobby Kidney Sunshine Club.

He frequented the Dalton Public Library and the Berkshire Athenaeum, where he and his wife were given the Patrons of the Year award in 2004. A lifelong fisherman, he also enjoyed bowling and ice skating.

He and his wife, the former Lucille Smith, would have celebrated their 61st anniversary Sept. 30.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Risa Grossman of Peabody and Joan Grossman of Pittsfield, and three grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- At the request of the family, the funeral for Dr. George Grossman, 83, who died July 14, 2006, will be private. The family will receive friends during Shiva at the family home, 94 Sampson Parkway, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Donations in his memory may be made to Knesset Israel Synagogue or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. He also leaves his grandsons, Russell Grossman-Ososke, David Grossman-Ponemon and Benjamin Grossman-Ponemon, and two sons-in-law, Michael Ososke and Lawrence Ponemon. George enjoyed good friends, good neighbors and good food.

Most of all, he was a dear, loving and devoted husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. His family was his greatest joy, and he will be missed greatly by his family and friends. He will be remembered best by his favorite, if not comical, motto: "Be true to your teeth, and they shall not be false unto you."
