Winifred Joan Canby

August 02, 2006

Winifred Joan Canby, 81, of Hartland, Vt., formerly of Pittsfield, died Wednesday at Valley Terrace Assisted Living Center in White River Junction, Vt.

Born in Dover on Feb. 19, 1925, daughter of Francis B. and Winifred Dean Grinnell, she spent several years of her childhood in England beginning in 1934, but returned to the family's Dover residence at the outbreak of World War II.

There she attended Beaver Country Day School. She graduated in 1946 from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., with a degree in nursing.

During her career as a nurse, she worked in Piermont, N.Y., Saranac Lake (N.Y.) General Hospital, Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vt., and as nurse and health teacher at Gorham (N.H.) High School.

She married Dr. Alvin Volkman, and the family lived in Buffalo, N.Y.; Cleveland; Harvard; Middletown, R.I.; Wayland; Piermont, N.Y.; Oxford, England, and Saranac Lake, N.Y.

She married her second husband, the late William M. Canby, in 1971, and lived with him in Burlington, Vt., Randolph, N.H.; Stowe, Vt.; Strong, Maine; and Pittsfield. They also frequently spent summers at their cabin on Loon Lake in Rangely, Maine. He died in 1995, after which she moved to Hartland.

Mrs. Canby was both a Unitarian and an Episcopalian. She was also a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, and an animal lover. In her youth, she rode and showed horses, and kept horses throughout her life, continuing to ride until age 79.

She and Mr. Canby had been members of the Pierpole Riding Club in Strong. She adopted innumerable dogs, cats and birds, and was a docent at the Berkshire Museum aquarium. She also was a generous donor to the Berkshire Humane Society.

She leaves two sons, Karl Frederick Volkman of Hinsdale and Nicholas Volkman of Newtown, Pa.; three daughters, Gretchen Werrell of Rock Hill, S.C., Rebecca Evans of Granville, Ohio, Deborah Falls of Hartland, Vt.; two brothers, David Grinnell of Washington, D.C., and Michael Grinnell of Kaunakakai, Hawaii; a sister, Nancy Sayre of Marion; 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorials for Winifred Canby, who died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, may be sent to the Berkshire Humane Society, 214 Barker Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Mrs. Canby was the granddaughter of Frederick Grinnell, who perfected the Grinnell fire sprinkler system still used in factories, schools, hospitals and other applications nationwide.

Arrangements are being handled by Eternal Flame Crematorium, 239 Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
