Gordon Frederick Gates Sr., 64, of 19 Hillside St., died Wednesday at Hillcrest Commons, where he had resided since July 6.
Born in Pittsfield on May 3, 1942, son of Gordon J. and Marjorie Jacques Gates, he was educated in Pittsfield schools.
Mr. Gates was employed by John H. Flynn Tree Service in Lenox as a tree surgeon for many years, retiring in the 1980s.
He also worked part-time as a taxicab driver during and after his employment with Flynn Tree Surgeons.
An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and tying his own flies for fly-fishing.
He also enjoyed NASCAR, going on car rides to Vermont and watching wrestling on television.
Mr. Gates and his wife, the former Geraldine B. DeLuce, were married in 1982.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Gordon F. Gates Jr. of Manchester, Conn.; two daughters, Tammy L. Newhall of Vernon, Conn., and Tracy A. Deane of Manchester, Conn.; a brother, John M. Gates of Pittsfield; three sisters, Lorraine Robitaille, Esther Knappe and Geraldine Daly, all of Pittsfield; and six grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Gordon F. Gates Sr., who died Wednesday, August 9, 2006, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 11, at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating.
Burial will be private. Calling hours will be Friday from noon to 1 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Gates may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Mr. Gates also leaves his six grandchildren, Jayson, Jennifer, Richard, Emily, Ryan and Alison, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Christopher Gates, and two sisters, Theresa Fosty and Joanne Obert.
