Elaine E. McCarthy, 80, of 76 Baldwin Ave. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center of an apparent heart attack shortly after being admitted.
She was a three-time cancer survivor.
Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 26, 1926, daughter of Edward J. and Edna Hilmer Gilligan, she was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. McCarthy was employed by the New Haven-Hartford Railroad as a secretary and, later, by General Electric Co. in the blueprint department for five years.
She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and enjoyed cooking and taking trips to Cape Cod. She was a Red Sox fan.
She and her husband, Eugene T. McCarthy, were married May 1, 1947.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Michael W. McCarthy of Cheshire and Kenneth J. McCarthy of Hinsdale; a daughter, Karen A. Bailey of Hinsdale; eight grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Elaine E. McCarthy, who died in Pittsfield on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, was a loving grandmother to Jenny, Katie and Amy McCarthy, Jason McCarthy, and Tara, Kristin, Brandon and Kyle Bailey, and a beloved great-grandmother to Adriana Bailey-Henry.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 11 at DWYERFUNERALHOME by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
Mrs. McCarthy was a loving mother-in-law to Joanne M. McCarthy, Scott Bailey and Jeri McCarthy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berkshire County division of the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. She had many animals over the years and enjoyed the trips to the Cape with her husband and dog, Sandy.
