Eugene T. McCarthy

Eugene T. McCarthy, 80, of 76 Baldwin Ave., died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Pittsfield on June 5, 1926, son of Thomas and Pauline Labrode McCarthy, he attended local schools and was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield.

He also attended fire science courses at Berkshire Community College.

Mr. McCarthy joined the Pittsfield Fire Department as a provisional fireman on Jan. 1, 1952, and became a permanent fireman on Dec. 10, 1952. He was assigned to the Central Fire Station, retiring as a deputy's aid on Oct. 14, 1981. Prior to that, he worked as a plumber for the city of Pittsfield, and drove tractor trailers for Old Colony Transportation, Brown's Express and Conway's Express. At one time he was also a code enforcer for the Pittsfield Health Department.

He was a communicant of St. Charles Church.

He was a member of the Teamster's Union Local 108, Pittsfield Department Firemen's Benefit Association and the International Association of Firefighters Local 2647. Mr. McCarthy enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a Red Sox fan. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working on his 1940 antique Chevrolet.

His wife, the former Elaine E. Gilligan, died Aug. 18. They were married May 1, 1947.

He leaves two sons, Michael W. McCarthy of Cheshire and Kenneth J. McCarthy of Hinsdale.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Eugene T. McCarthy, longtime Pittsfield fireman, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at Berkshire Medical Center. Loving grandfather to Jenny, Katie and Amy McCarthy, Jason McCarthy, and Tara, Kristin, Brandon and Kyle Bailey, and a beloved great-grandfather to Adriana Bailey-Henry. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 28, at 9 a.m. from DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. Mr. McCarthy was a loving father-in-law to Joanne M. McCarthy, Scott Bailey and Jeri McCarthy. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Berkshire County Division of the American Cancer Society, care of the funeral home.

He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia McCarthy, and two brothers, Richard and William McCarthy. He enjoyed fall trips with his wife to the Cape with their faithful dog Sandy, and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
