Nathan Kaplan

Nathan Kaplan, 95, of 10 Taconic St., a longtime resident of New York City, died at home on Sunday after a brief illness.

Born in Shenandoah, Pa., on Nov. 20, 1910, son of Isaac and Anna Mednick Kaplan, he attended schools there and was a 1928 graduate of Tamaqua High School. Continuing his education, he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from New York University.

He was employed in the aeronautics industry, first for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, and later for Kollsman Instrument Co. Following his retirement, he moved to Jerusalem for six years. He then returned to the United States and settled in Pittsfield in 1990.

He was an active member of Knesset Israel Synagogue and was a volunteer at Tanglewood for many years at the Glass House.

He and his wife, the former Eleanor Stone, were married June 18, 1939, at the Brooklyn Jewish Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, David Kaplan of New York City.

A daughter, Iva Kaplan Ashner, died March 13, 1998.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Nathan Kaplan, who died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, will be on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Knesset Israel Synagogue, with Rabbi David Greenspoon, Spiritual Leader, officiating.

Burial will follow in Knesset Israel Cemetery. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to Knesset Israel Torah Maintenance Fund or the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires Senior Lunch Program in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Condolence callers will be received at the family home, 10 Taconic St., on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Traditional Minyan Services will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

He is also survived by his son-in-law and his wife, Leon and Joan Ashner.
