William Frances Garneau

William Frances Garneau, 92, formerly of Colonial Gardens, and a longtime resident of Wellington Avenue, died Thursday at Westview Nursing Home in Dayville, Conn.

Born in Adams on July 16, 1914, son of Nelson and Virginia Gamache Garneau, he was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School and attended the University of Buffalo.

He served in the National Guard and worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Mr. Garneau was employed by General Electric Co. as a toolmaker and wrote a fishing column for the GE News. He retired in 1997.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.

A musician, he played with the Greylock Mountain Boys during the 1930s and continued to entertain throughout his life. He was a naturalist who enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking.

His wife, the former Dorothy M. Harrington, died June 20, 2000. They had been married 59 years.

He leaves three daughters, Dorothy Clarkson of Safety Harbor, Fla., Honora Butts of Pomfret Center, Conn., and Marion Dewyngaert of Hudson, N.H.; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William Frances Garneau, who died Thursday, Sept. 14, will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Mr. Garneau will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family and many friends, including his sons-in-law, Robert Clarkson, Ralph Butts and Ronald Dewyngaert, and his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Garno, and by four sisters, Marie Sample and Marjorie Miller, and two younger ones who died in childhood. DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, is in charge of arrangements.
