Catherine C. DeCoster

Catherine C. DeCoster, 90, died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 3, 1916, daughter of Charles J. and Mary Mooney Creran, she was a 1934 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mrs. DeCoster was employed by New England Telephone Co. and by the former Sheaffer Eaton Co., retiring in 1976.

She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the Pittsfield Senior Center, where she taught crafts, and enjoyed crewel work, knitting and cooking.

She was widowed three times. Her first husband, Walter Briggs, died in 1963, and her second husband, James F. Driscoll, in 1976.

Her husband, Ellwood DeCoster, died in July.

She leaves two daughters, Mary Jane Alibozek of Pittsfield and Kathleen DeCoster of Salem, Conn.; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Catherine DeCoster died in Pittsfield on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006. She was a loving grandmother to Tim and Matt Alibozek, Kim Tomashek, and Keri and Paul DeCoster. Her beloved great-grandchildren are Sadie DeCoster, Luke and Shane Tomashek, and Jessie, Brett and Cole Alibozek.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 11:30 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon at St. Mark's Church celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. DeCoster was kindhearted, generous, and had a good sense of humor, yet had a healthy independent streak. She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles J. Creran and James H. Creran, and by a sister, Gertrude A. Creran Wetzel. She enjoyed being with family and friends.
