William H. Reddy Sr.

William H. Reddy Sr., 85, retired deputy fire chief of Pittsfield, of 19 Walden Lane, former longtime resident of 309 Wahconah St., died on early Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Derby, England, on April 10, 1921, son of the late John D. and Mary Barker Reddy, he immigrated to the United States as a child, and was a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted in 1940 and served aboard the USS Intrepid. He participated in the Marshall, Okinawa, Turk and Philippine campaigns and in the final raids on Japan. He was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Medal with four stars, WWII Victory Medal, American Area Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Following the war, he was appointed to the Pittsfield Fire Department as a firefighter. He became lieutenant in 1951, captain in 1955, department chief in 1962, and chief of fire prevention from 1968 until his retirement in 1980. He received his associate's degree in fire science from Berkshire Community College, where he served as chairman of the fire science department from 1969 until 1991. He also instructed volunteer firefighters throughout Berkshire County.

He served as president of Goodwill Industries Inc. of Pittsfield for 20 years. In 1986, he was named as one of Pittsfield's 100 most influential citizens for his commitment to Goodwill and his volunteer work with the Red Cross, from which he retired five years ago.

Mr. Reddy was a communicant of St. Charles' Church, where he served as a eucharistic minister and was a member of its Holy Name Society.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 68, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. From 1976 to the present, he served as an associate curator of the USS Intrepid Air and Space Museum, docked on the Hudson River in Manhattan, and also played Santa Claus for underprivileged children on the Intrepid for many years.

He and his wife, the former Helen Hynes, would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on Jan. 5. They were married at St. Charles Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Sharon Alpert of Hamden, Conn., and Patricia Scheuffler and Joan Wrinn, both of Pittsfield; a son, William H. Reddy Jr. of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William H. Reddy Sr., 85, who died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, will be on Friday at 9 a.m. from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles' Church, celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to St. Charles' Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He was the loving "Pop" to, James, Firefighter Kevin and Noah Martin, all of New Haven, and Amal Rawling and Jenny Lemberg, both of Pittsfield, Fire Capt. Matthew Lemberg of Northampton, Luke Lemberg and Will Reddy of Waltham, Eric Reddy of Franklin, and Mallory Reddy of Cheshire; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Madeline Rawling, both of Pittsfield. He was the loving father-in-law to Paul Alpert, Ray Scheuffler, Andy Wrinn, and Judy Reddy.

He is also survived by his longtime friends, James and Donna Neureuther of Lanesborough. He was predeceased by another grandson, Mark Lemberg in 1995 and another son-in-law, Albert Lemberg in 1996.
