Josephine M. Duane

Josephine M. Duane, of 8 Laflin Terrace died Friday at home.

Born in Willards, Md., on Sept. 2, 1925, daughter of Rufus and Esther Triut Cordrey, she attended Pittsville (Md.) High School and was a graduate of Grace Business and Secretarial School in New York City.

She was employed by General Motors in New York City as a private secretary.

She moved to Pittsfield in 1956.

She did volunteer work in Pittsfield for the Catholic Youth Center, Red Cross, Catholic school system, Hillcrest Hospital and Berkshire Medical Center. For 10 years she served on a panel for the Department of Social Services in foster care review. She also participated for years in many community drives.

She and her husband, Thomas A. Duane Sr., were married May 26, 1956, in St. Joan of Arc Church, Jackson Heights, N.Y. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Marianne B. Duane Handerek; two sons, Thomas A. Duane Jr. and Mark Joseph Duane, all of Pittsfield; and seven grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Josephine M. Duane died in Pittsfield on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006. She leaves seven grandchildren, whom she loved dearly: Alyssa Duane, Olivia Handerek, Thomas Duane, Eva Handerek, Lily Handerek, Mark Joseph Duane Jr. and Matthew Duane. Beloved mother-in-law to Elizabeth Duane, Elizabeth (Missy) Duane and Ted Handerek.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. from DWYER FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church, celebrated by the Rev. Mark Mengel, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Margie Blair and Mildred Savage. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation or St. Teresa's Church care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, in her memory.
