Phyllis Velte Hamilton

Phyllis Velte Hamilton, 87, of 140 Melbourne Place died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Broken Bow, Neb., on Oct. 22, 1918, daughter of Charles H. and Eglantine Skillman Velte, she attended public schools and Doane College in Crete, Neb., and completed her nursing training and registered nurse certification at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Neb., in 1941. In 1942, she earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Hastings (Neb.) College.

During World War II, she practiced as a registered nurse at Spahn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lincoln (Neb.) General Hospital. She received a master's degree in nursing and obstetrics in 1945 from Chicago Lying-In Hospital and completed advanced studies in nursing at Doane College in 1946. She returned to Lincoln General Hospital and was appointed supervisor and instructor in obstetrics.

She and her first husband, Clarence Tavis, were married Nov. 11, 1941. He died in December 1945.

She and her husband, Robert Hamilton, were married Dec. 13, 1949. They lived in Wichita, Kan., from 1952 until 1960, when they moved to North Adams. She was employed at the Child Guidance Center there as a secretary.

Mrs. Hamilton was a charter member of the North Adams League of Women Voters, serving in various offices, and was a long-term active member of the Monday Club in North Adams.

She becam an ombudsman for elder care along with her husband and they appeared several times on citizens' panels for the Boston Herald and on National Public Broadcasting panels. She was active in elder care services programs in Adams.

She leaves her husband of Pittsfield; three sons, Charles D. Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz., Gerald M. Hamilton of Diamond Point, N.Y., and Lawrence J. Hamilton of Boston; two daughters, Phyllis A. Hamilton of Victoria, Texas, and Kathryn C. Hamilton of Danbury, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Phyllis Velte Hamilton died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006. The family will hold a private celebration of her life with a gathering of loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in her memory to Adopt-A-Pet of Victoria, Texas, 8215 Houston Highway, Victoria, Texas, 77901, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME in Adams is handling all cremation arrangements. She also leaves her daughters-in-law, Beverly Ball Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz., Shelly Harlow Hamilton of Diamond Point, N.Y., and Rachel Wilson of Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, David Lemke of Victoria, Texas; five grandsons, Mark Arthur and Lisa Petre Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Victor and Marnee Kvaall Hamilton II of Brno, Czech Republic, Morgan Harlow and Heather Mose Hamilton of Troy, N.Y., Mason Velte Hamilton of Diamond Point, Lawrence Pessolano of Danbury, Conn.; three granddaughters, Marcia Ann Pessolano of Hartford, Conn., Anthony and Jennifer Hamilton Petri of Fort Edward, N.Y., and Keith and Meredith Hamilton Sonley of Warrensburg, N.Y. Phyllis is survived by seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Nicolas and Ashley Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz.; Karlee, Koree and Kaisee Hamilton of Brno, Czech Republic; and Lonna Sonley of Warrensburg, N.Y.
