Helen M. "Cookie" Brooks, 59, formerly of the Leeds section of Northampton, died Saturday at the Worcester Skilled Care Nursing Center in Worcester after a 12-year battle with Huntington's Disease.
Born in Pittsfield on June 21, 1947, daughter of Bruno and Mary Castagna Galvigni, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1965, and moved to Northampton.
She worked as a nurse's aide at the former Northampton State Hospital and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Leeds.
Mrs. Brooks was a communicant of St. Catherine's Church in Leeds and St. Mary's in Northampton.
She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, motorcycle riding, gardening, flowers and the company of her family and grandchildren.
She leaves her husband, Gerald E. Brooks of Westfield, whom she married.
Also, she leaves her mother, Mary Castagna Galvigni of Pittsfield; two daughters, Kimberly Brooks and Kristin Monfette, both of Conway; a son, Kirt Brooks of Jupiter, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A funeral service for Helen M. "Cookie" Brooks, who died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at PEASE AND GAY FUNERAL HOME, 425 Prospect St., Northampton. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service.
The family requests that donations be made in Helen's memory to the Huntington's Disease Society of America/New England, 1253 Worcester Road, Suite 202, Framingham, MA 01791, or the Worcester Skilled Care Center, Patient Recreational Department, c/o Judy Conant, 59 Acton St., Worcester, MA 01604.
She also leaves a son-in-law, Mark Monfette, and five grandchildren, Shane O'Brien Jr., Alyssa O'Brien, Jared Curtis, Alex Monfette and Nathan Monfette.
