Oscar "Ozzie" Shreefter

Oscar "Ozzie" Shreefter, 88, of 140 Melbourne Road, Melbourne Place, died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in New York City on Oct. 10, 1918, son of Nathan and Mary Asnis Shreefter, he attended local schools and was a 1936 graduate of James Monroe High School in the Bronx.

He later graduated from Fordham University College of Pharmacy.

A World War II veteran of the Army, he served as a platoon leader of the 67th Field Hospital, 9th Army, Medical Administration Corps, from 1942 until 1946.

He participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque.

Mr. Shreefter was the owner/ operator of the former King Drug in the Bronx for 30 years. He retired in 1984 and moved to the Berkshires.

He was a member of Temple Anshe Amunim and the Country Club of Pittsfield, and for 20 years volunteered as an usher at Tanglewood in Lenox. He enjoyed golfing, theater and music. In his earlier years, he pitched in semi-professional baseball and, at one point, was offered a tryout with the New York Yankees.

He and his wife, the former Laura Tabachnick, were married June 28, 1942. She died April 17, 1992.

He leaves a son, Dr. Michael Shreefter of Pittsfield; a daughter, Karen Shreefter of Monterey; and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Oscar "Ozzie" Shreefter, 87, who died Oct. 23, 2006, will be on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Temple Anshe Amunim, with Rabbi Mark Wieder, spiritual leader, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery, Temple Anshe Amunim Section. Donations may be made to the Berkshire VNA or the Meredith Shreefter Endowment Fund at KI in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

The family will receive friends during Shiva at the family home, 48 Gravesleigh Terrace, on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. Minyan services will be on Thursday at 7 p.m.

He is also survived by his granddaughters, Dr. Alison Jensen and Mariel Shreefter; his son-in-law, Christopher Blair; and his daughter-in-law, Arlene Shreefter. He was predeceased by another granddaughter, Meredith Shreefter, and a sister, Sophia Strom. His greatest joy in life was his family and friends. He was a very proud father and grandfather.
