Robert B. Magner

Robert B. Magner, 88, of 298 West Housatonic St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on June 10, 1918, son of John P. and Katherine Clary Magner, he was a 1936 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.
A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he served from January 1942 to September 1946 in Africa and Italy with the 444th Bomber Squadron as a tail gunner on the B-25 aircraft. He was shot down and wounded over Po Valley, Italy, on his 50th bombing mission and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Magner was employed by General Electric Co. for 42 years in the power transformer department as a machinist, retiring in 1982. He also served as a shop steward.
He was a communicant of St. Mark's Church and a member of the GE Quarter-Century and Pensioners' clubs and the Irish-American Club. During the 1960s, he served on the Board of Registrar of Voters under then Mayor Remo Del Gallo. He also was active in the Berkshire Democratic Committee.
He enjoyed gardening and was a fan of the Red Sox and Patriots.
He and his wife, the former Marjorie Fanning, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary June 19.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Francis X. Magner of Shrewsbury and Michael Magner of Queensbury, N.Y.; a daughter, Mary Irene Connolly of Concord, N.H.; a brother, John H. Magner of Pittsfield, and seven grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Robert B. Magner, 88, who died Oct. 28, 2006, will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 at St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to St. Mark's Food Pantry in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
He also leaves his loving grandchildren, Kerry Connolly, and Michael, Shane, Dianna, Dustin, Jeremy and Mary Kate Magner. He was predeceased by three brothers, Francis J., Arthur J. and Richard J. Magner, and by a sister, Cecelia Bercury. In a note sent to family and friends, Mr. Magner's children said, "We don't think anyone who knew our Dad will ever forget his humor, common sense and encouragement. We will always be very grateful for the good luck and great pleasure of having been his children."
