Pasquale A. "Pat" Bruni, 81, of 111 Highview Drive died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 1, 1924, son of Vincenzo A. and Mary Carnute Bruni, he received his bachelor's degree in 1950 and his master's degree in education administration in 1957, both from the University of Massachusetts.
A World War II Navy airman, he served as a gunner and radio operator in the Pacific and was awarded a Letter of Commendation.
Mr. Bruni was a math, American history and social studies teacher in the Pittsfield Public School System from 1954 until retiring in 1982. He began at the former Briggs Elementary, where he also served as acting principal, and was appointed principal of Rice Elementary in 1969. He also taught at the former Tucker, Hibbard and Bartlett elementary schools, and at South and North junior high schools, and coached extracurricular sports.
A lifetime member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, he served for 50 consecutive years and was head rules interpreter and clinician for 40 years. He refereed on both the high school and college levels.
He was a baseball umpire for the Pittsfield Parks Department from 1953 to 1964 and a football referee for high schools and preparatory schools. He also was a sportscaster on WBRK. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member and former board member of Berkshire Hills Country Club.
Mr. Bruni lived independently at his home even after suffering a stroke four years ago.
He leaves several nieces and a nephew.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Pasquale "Pat" Bruni, 81, will be Friday, Nov. 3, at 9 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club, in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
He leaves his nieces, Karyn, Alyson and Marilyn Posella, and a nephew, Jebin Bruni. He was predeceased by his sisters, Benita Posella and Marion Bruni, and by his brother, Peter Bruni.
