Luella Ann Crowell, 76, of 51 Fairfield St. died Monday at Hillcrest Commons, where she had resided since August.
Born in Albany, N.Y., on April 20, 1930, daughter of H. Edmund and Helen Gilbert Crowell, her mother died while giving birth to her, and she was raised in Hillsdale, N.Y., by her aunt, Evelena Gilbert Almstead.
She was a 1948 graduate of Roeliff-Jansen High School and attended Ithaca State College.
She joined the Marine Corps in 1953 and completed air traffic control school in Olatha, Kan., and naval air technical training in Jacksonville, Fla. She was the second female air traffic controller to work as a tower supervisor. She also did several tours of duty as a Marine recruiter and was honorably discharged in 1967.
Ms. Crowell lived in Great Barrington for many years and was employed by Becton, Dickenson & Co. in Canaan, Conn., for 10 years, retiring in 1997. After that, she worked part time for Berkshire County Arc.
She enjoyed sports and classical music.
She leaves a daughter, Judybeth Crowell of Pittsfield, and a brother, Edmund Crowell of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Luella Ann Crowell, who died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, will be conducted Friday at 11 at DERY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Rober M. Rennie, pastor of First Baptist Church.
Burial will follow in Hillsdale (N.Y.) Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 2 to 5 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Supportive Day Program for Memory Disorders, in care of Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, 330 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Miss Crowell, remembered for her love of good times with friends and family, also leaves her nieces, Judith and Barbara; several cousins, and her beloved pet pug, Mozart.
