Allan E. Reis Sr.

Allan E. Reis Sr., 74, of 77 Delancy Ave. died Tuesday, Nov. 21, at home after a short battle with cancer.

Born in West Chelmsford on Oct. 8, 1932, the son of Oscar E. and Helen Westberg Reis, he was a 1950 graduate of Chelmsford High School.

He received his degree in engineering magna cum laude in 1959 from the former Lowell Technical Institute.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1951 until 1955 aboard the USS Monssen. While he was in basic training, he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, which he later turned down. Mr. Reis was employed by General Electric as an engineer in the Ordnance Department for 33 years. He retired in 1992.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he volunteered at the Harvest Table. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.

Mr. Reis enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting, and was a history buff.

He and his wife, the former Florence Ziemba, would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Dec. 26. They were married in the First United Methodist Church in West Chelmsford.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Dr. Allan E. Reis Jr. of Norway, Maine, Kevin C. Reis of Stuyvesant, N.Y., and Dr. Andrew C. Reis of Cooperstown, N.Y.; a sister, Carolyn Anderson of Ayer; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Lynnea McAuliffe, on Oct. 24, 1997.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Allan E. Reis Sr., who died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at DEVANNY- CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Luis E. Benavides, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Citizens Scholarship Fund of Pittsfield, HospiceCare in The Berkshires, or the First United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

He also leaves his grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Sarah, Michael, Brian, Joshua, Benjamin and William Reis, Nicole, Kayla, Alexis and Stephanie McAuliffe; his step-grandchildren, Emily and Kate Maresca; his great-granddaughter, Hannah Reis-LaGrange; his daughters-in-law, Sally, Lisa and Anne Reis; and his great aunt, Bertha Waters. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Reis, in 2000. He was proud of his Swedish heritage and was a devoted family man.
